4.
Align and place the decoder in to the top of the frames, and then move
frames back together as shown in Figure 1. When all is secure, re-tighten the
two frame screws. Take care motor tabs do not short to frames.
5.
Remove the white ring from the adhesive on the speaker diaphragm side,
and raise the decoder rear just enough to now place the speaker-face down
on the frame halves and centered over the rear gear tower. Be sure that there
is insulating Kapton tape or similar on the speaker rear covering the shiny
magnet disc. The slight upward pressure on the back of the decoder helps
engage the track pickup tabs.
6.
Place some insulation across the front frames at the cab position. Do not
interfere with drive gears. Setup the 100uF capacitor sideways at the cab
position. Double-sided tape can be used carefully to help hold this in place
and insulate this from powered frame halves.
7.
Fold and shape any wires so that they do not interfere with shell replace-
ment.
8.
Place the loco on an active DCC track powered by a compatible DCC system
and select the factory default address 03 to enable sounds for testing.
9.
Be sure F8 (mute) is OFF to allow sound output, and then press F1 (bell)
or F2 (whistle/horn) ON to hear the associated sounds. The sound level is
dictated by the N-scale speaker size.
10. After confirming the decoder is functional, carefully replace the locomotive
shell, making sure that the parts and wires are not crimped or damaged.
11. Customize sounds by programming Sound CVs to adjust the desired configu-
rations, as shown in the following tables of SoundFX CVs.
12. If you need different locomotive sounds for your model than those available
in the default factory scheme, download a suitable SPJ sound project file
from Digitrax Sound Depot or other source and download this using the free
SoundLoader II app.
Note: This is a example installation for this Atlas GP38 which has the
"A0" form factory light board, other models may require modification of
the locomotive to make space for the speaker and capacitor.
