Page 2 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Functional Description The Feeder Assembly extracts components from reels or ammo packs and inserts them into the carrier clip on the sequencer chain to be transported to the insertion head. The low parts warning and the component lead conditioner are part of the feeder assembly.

D Procedures and Adjustments Adjustments and maintenance procedures required to ensure the machine operates efficiently are presented in the following subsections of this document. These are: Feeder Low Parts Warning Component Lead Conditioner Feeder Adjustment Procedures The procedures contained within this section are used to maintain the feeder.
  • Page 6 Page 4 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Retract the driver. Loosen the hex jam nut on the shaft of the pneumatic cylinder and thread the shaft into or out of the driver block as necessary. Check the dimension and repeat step 4 until the proper dimension is achieved.

Page 5 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D Driver Clearance Adjustment This adjustment prevents excessive lateral movement or binding between the driver and housing. This adjustment may be performed with the feeder either on the machine or removed from the machine and placed on a work surface. Prerequisites: Feeder Preliminary Forward Stroke Adjustment To adjust the driver clearance, perform the following procedure.
  • Page 8: Cutter Adjustment

Page 6 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Cutter Adjustment The purpose of this procedure is to adjust the cutter block to the left or right so that the component carrying cardboard strip is sheared cleanly and with a minimum of resistance.
  • Page 9: Return Stroke Stop Adjustment

Page 7 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D Loosen the adjusting screw and pull the cutter block out so the clearance is too large. To apply some pressure to the cutter holder, tighten the 2 cutter holder screws until the split lock washers just start to collapse.
  • Page 10 Page 8 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Retract the air cylinder with 80 psi. Use a feeler gauge to check for a minimum clearance of .010 inch (0,25mm) between the ratchet dog and the housing post. NOTE Rotate the cam wheel counterclockwise to eliminate any free play between the link and the drive pin when making the measurement.

Page 9 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D When the correct clearance is achieved tighten the locking set screw against the adjusting screw. Check the clearances on all the teeth. If any are incorrect, repeat the adjustment procedure.
  • Page 12 Page 10 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Loosen the set screw that secures the anti-back-up dog eccentric in position as illustrated. Turn the set screw in that secures the eccentric until it bottoms out on the eccentric, but do not tighten. Manually actuate the main driver to position the reference mark on the ratchet wheel at the anti-back-up dog.

Page 11 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D Anti-Back-Up Dog Adjustment for 15 MM Heads This adjustment ensures that the anti-back-up dog engages each tooth of the ratchet wheel at the end of the return stroke. This procedure applies to the following 15 mm feeders: •...
  • Page 14 Page 12 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) If the clearance between the anti-back-up dog and the ratchet wheel is too small, the dog fails to properly position at the end of the return stroke. This would allow the feed wheel to back up on the next forward stroke and fails to advance the component carrying cardboard strip.
  • Page 15 Page 13 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D Tighten the locking set screw. Verify that the mounting block remains parallel to the housing. If needed, repeat adjustment until correct. Loosen the eccentric locking set screw. Turn the set screw in until it just bottoms out, but do not tighten.

Page 16 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Align Feeder To Carrier Clip Care must be used in aligning the feeder to the carrier clip to prevent damage to the carrier clip. This adjustment positions the feeder on the sequencer module so the pusher aligns with the carrier clip.
  • Page 19 Page 17 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D Insert the .030 inch (0.76mm) feeler gauge setup tool where illustrated and check the clearance. When properly aligned, the feeler gauge is touching both surfaces and the carrier clip is displaced as far as it will go to the left. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the socket head cap screw, which holds the feeder on the sequencer, and push the dispenser to the left until the correct alignment is obtained.

Page 18 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Refire Assembly Adjustment To ensure that components with small lead diameters will be accurately sensed while maintaining the ability to detect missing components, the overlap of the refire housing to the component support must be set. Prerequisites: Machine main power is on, machine is palmed down.
  • Page 21: Final Forward Stroke Adjustment

Page 19 Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) 49668501 Rev. D Final Forward Stroke Adjustment The forward stroke must be adjusted to allow the component leads to fully seat in the carrier clip. If the stroke is too short, the leads fail to pass the high points on the clamps, and the component falls off the clip.
  • Page 22 Page 20 49668501 Rev. D Radial 8, 88, HT Feeders (Dispensing Heads) Observe whether the pushers are pushing the component leads all the way into the notches in the carrier clip. The pusher should be contacting the front of the leads, and the leads should be contacting the back of the notches in the carrier clip.
