3 Description

The TPA3113D2 is a 6-W (per channel) efficient,
Class-D audio power amplifier for driving bridged-tied
stereo
speakers.
Technology enables the use of inexpensive ferrite
bead filters at the outputs while meeting EMC
requirements. SpeakerGuard™ speaker protection
circuitry includes an adjustable power limiter and a
DC detection circuit. The adjustable power limiter
allows the user to set a virtual voltage rail lower than
the chip supply to limit the amount of current through
the speaker. The DC detect circuit measures the
frequency and amplitude of the PWM signal and
shuts off the output stage if the input capacitors are
damaged or shorts exist on the inputs.
The TPA3113D2 can drive stereo speakers as low as
4 Ω. The high efficiency of the TPA3113D2, 87%,
eliminates the need for an external heat sink when
playing music.
The outputs are also fully protected against shorts to
GND, VCC, and output-to-output. The short-circuit
protection and thermal protection includes an auto-
recovery feature.

    (3) The TPA3113D2 incorporates an exposed thermal pad on the underside of the chip. This acts as a heatsink, and it must be connected to a thermally dissipating plane for proper power dissipation. Failure to do so may result in the device going into thermal protection shutdown.

  • Page 13: Detailed Description

7 Detailed Description 7.1 Overview To facilitate system design, the TPA3113D2 needs only a single power supply between 8 V and 26 V for operation. An internal voltage regulator provides suitable voltage levels for the gate driver, digital and low-voltage analog circuitry.
  • Page 14: Feature Description

7.3.1 Gain Setting Through GAIN0 and GAIN1 Inputs The gain of the TPA3113D2 is set by two input terminals, GAIN0 and GAIN1. The voltage slew rate of these gain terminals, along with terminals 1 and 14, must be restricted to no more than 10 V/ms. For higher slew rates, use a 100-kΩ...
  • Page 15 GAIN0 7.3.2 SD Operation The TPA3113D2 employs a shutdown mode of operation designed to reduce supply current (I ) to the absolute minimum level during periods of non-use for power conservation. The SD input terminal should be held high (see specification table for trip point) during normal operation when the amplifier is in use.
  • Page 16 7.3.5 DC Detect TPA3113D2 has circuitry which will protect the speakers from DC current which might occur due to defective capacitors on the input or shorts on the printed-circuit board at the inputs. A DC detect fault is reported on the FAULT pin as a low state.
  • Page 17: Device Functional Modes

SLOS650F – AUGUST 2009 – REVISED JUNE 2016 7.3.8 Thermal Protection Thermal protection on the TPA3113D2 prevents damage to the device when the internal die temperature exceeds 150°C. There is a ±15°C tolerance on this trip point from device to device. When the die temperature exceeds the thermal set point, the device enters into the shutdown state and the outputs are disabled.
  • Page 18: Application And Implementation

8.1 Application Information The TPA3113D2 is designed for use in stereo speakers like in TV sets, sound docks, and Bluetooth speakers. The TPA3113D2 can either be configured in stereo or mono mode, depending on output power conditions.
  • Page 19 8.2.1.2 Detailed Design Procedure 8.2.1.2.1 Ferrite Bead Filter Considerations Using the Advanced Emissions Suppression Technology in the TPA3113D2 amplifier it is possible to design a high efficiency Class-D audio amplifier while minimizing interference to surrounding circuits. It is also possible to accomplish this with only a low-cost ferrite bead filter.

10.1.1 PCB Material Recommendation TI recommends using FR-4 Glass Epoxy material with 1 oz. (35 μm) for the TPA3113D2. The use of this material can provide for higher power output, improved thermal performance, and better EMI margin (due to lower PCB trace inductance).
