Overview

MATERIALS/MANUFACTURING

All blow-molded Pelican SUPs are made of high-density polyethylene.

Your SUP is made of RAM-XS TM. Its great flexibility offers exceptional shock resistance. This flexibility increases with heat or with the craft's prolonged exposure to the sun but may also slightly warp the hull.
The warping disappears when the hull cools and never affects the craft's performance.
RAM-XS TM is a superior material derived drom RAM-X TM, a material developed and registered in 1978. These type of materials became the benchmark of quality in the industry thanks to their shock resistance and ability to regain their initial shape following an impact. Widely hailed by consumers, RAM-XS TM is a step above other materials used in the industry.

TRANSPORTATION

You can easily transport your SUP with the carrying handles located at the front, rear or centre.

  • BY HAND: Carry the board by using the carrying handles. If necessary, use a transport cart to help with the transport.
  • By VEHICLE: When strapping to the top of your car, place the SUP underside up.

Placing the topside up may generate wind drag and instability when driving. Placing the front or the back of the SUP forward are both acceptable. Over tightening straps may result in pressure dings. Use padded straps instead of non-padded nylon straps.

Avoid keeping the SUP firmly attached to your vehicle for an extended period of time, particularly when exposed to the sun. This could create distortions in the hull over time.

PRE-LAUNCH CHECKLIST

  • Always wear a proper personal flotation device (PFD).
  • Always have an emergency safety kit on hand as required by applicable laws (whistle, etc.).
  • Ensure to remove the hardware used to attach the SUP during transport.
  • Ensure the vent cap is firmly in place.
  • Ensure the length of your paddle is properly adjusted for your height

(see details described in «Basic SUP Principles»).

LAUNCHING PROCEDURE

Do not stand up on the SUP when objects nearby present a falling hazard (dock, rocks, etc.).
Remain on your knees and use the paddle to move away before standing up. You can return to a kneeling position at any time if a hazardous situation presents itself.

  • Keep your paddle in your hand at all times.
  • Make sure the water is deep enough to not damage the fin.
  • Kneel in the centre of the SUP and put your hands on each side of the board for added stability.
  • Stand up one foot at a time - use your paddle for balance.
  • Position your feet in the middle of the board with one foot on each side of the centre carry handle.
  • Start paddling when you feel comfortable.

MOORING/DOCKING

If you want to moor your SUP to a dock, make sure that:

  • It is away from rocks or sharp objects.
  • The water is deep enough to avoid damaging the fin and the board.

Avoid mooring your SUP against a dock that is not equipped with protecting bumpers.

SUP BASICS

Learn and practice basic skills on a calm lake, in an open area that is not too crowded. Only take your SUP through rough water when you are master the basic SUP skills.
For maximum comfort, make sure you have properly adjusted your paddle length for your height. Generally, you should add 8-10 in. / 20-25 cm to your height to determine the correct paddle length. For example, if you are 5 ft 10 in. / 178 cm tall, your paddle should measure 78-80 in. / 198-203 cm long.
You should stand in the centre of the board when you paddle. In calm water, position your feet on each side of the centre carrying handle (shoulder-width) and point forward. In waves or rougher water, move one foot towards the back of the board and take a surfing position. Practice moving your feet on the board and changing positions to improve your balance.
The best way to quickly turn with your board is to transfer your weight back. By doing this, the front of the board will lift so it is easier to turn.
If you paddle on a large body of water (lake or ocean), ensure to use an ankle leash so you are connected to your board at all times. This will prevent your board from floating away from you if you fall.
If you do not have an ankle leash, always stay with your board – even if you lose your paddle. It is easier to paddle with your hands than trying to swim back to your board. Your board can also float away if the wind picks up and you are not on it. This is why we recommend using an ankle leash.
However, do not use an ankle leash if you paddle on a river with a strong current. Your board could drag you under the water and carry you down the river if you fall. The ankle leash could also get caught on something in the water (rocks, branches, tree trunks, etc.) and make you fall off your board.
Be careful in windy conditions as you are standing up and strong winds can impact your movements and push you off course. We recommend kneeling or sitting in such conditions as this help you maneuver your SUP.

HOW CAN YOU CARE FOR YOUR SUP?

  • Limit exposure of the deck-side of your SUP to direct sunlight. While in use, water flowing over the deck helps regulate surface temperature. However, when the anti-slip deck pad is dry, the heat absorption effect is amplified if directly exposed to sunlight.
  • Inspect your SUP for dings and cracks before and after each use. Minor abrasions, dents, wearing off and scratches are normal and will not impact your SUP's performance.
  • Store your SUP in a well-ventilated and shaded area when you do not use it. Your SUP can be damaged if it is exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

HOW CAN YOU MAINTAIN YOUR SUP?

  • The best way to clean your SUP is by using a mixture of mild soap and warm water.
We also recommend rinsing it with fresh water after each use to remove sand and saltwater deposits. Clean your SUP regularly to keep it looking like new. Some chemical substances contained in cleaning products and sunscreen lotions are likely to damage the anti-slip deck pad of your SUP.
  • Never try to paint your SUP. Paint will not adhere to the hull.

HOW CAN YOU STORE YOUR SUP FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME?

  • Clean your SUP.
  • Remove tight straps or ropes from the hull as this can deform your SUP.
  • Remove the drain plug and leave it out as this will regulate the air pressure inside the SUP. Place the SUP in an upright position (on its stern) to empty water that has accumulated as a result of condensation or seepage.
  • Store your SUP in a well-ventilated and shaded area. Direct sunlight for an extended period of time can damage it. Do not store your SUP in a SUP bag for extended periods of time. SUP bags are intended for transportation only. Prolonged storage of a wet SUP in a wet bag may cause mold and osmotic blisters. SUP bags also collect heat and can potentially overheat your SUP.
  • Place your SUP on a flat surface. Avoid placing it on sawhorses or resting it on its fin for an extended period of time. Avoid placing it close to a heat source (e.g., stove, radiator, etc.) or hanging it by its carrying handles as this could deform the hull over time. You can temporarily store your SUP on its side or in an upright position. However, storing it in either of these positions for an extended period of time could cause a flattening or deformation of the hull.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Paddle sports can be dangerous and physically demanding. Read the following information carefully before using your SUP. Failure to follow these warnings and precautions could result in serious injury or death.
When using a Pelican SUP, you are personally responsible to determine if you have the required skill level to handle the different water and wind conditions. You should use your best judgment as to when and where to use your SUP.
All users of a Pelican SUP agree to assume all risks and accept all responsibilities for any damage or injury, including death, which may result from using or handling a SUP. We strongly recommend taking a course with an experienced SUP instructor on proper paddling techniques, boating security and first aid before handling and using your SUP.

  1. WEATHER CONDITIONS AND WATER LEVELS
Check weather conditions and water levels before heading out. Never use your SUP when weather or water conditions (wind, heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding, choppy water or strong currents) can impact your ability to steer your SUP. Head to shore as soon as possible if you already are on the water.

  2. PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD)
Always wear a Coast Guard and/or government approved personal floating device (PFD). Before you start paddling, read the manufacturer's documentation about your PFD and familiarize yourself with how to properly wear it.

  3. ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
Never use or consume alcohol, drugs or any other mind altering substance that may affect your coordination, judgment or ability to safely and securely operate your SUP.

  4. SOUND-SIGNALLING DEVICE
Always have a sound-signalling device with you. The Coast Guard (or other government bodies) requires that boaters be equipped with a sound-signalling device to alert other vessels to their presence. Attach it to your PFD if possible.

  5. ABILITY
Know your limits. Consult your physician before beginning your SUP training. Realistically assess your physical condition to determine how far and how long you can paddle or swim.

  6. TRACTION ON THE SUP
The board material is extremely slippery when wet. Stay on the anti-slip cushioned deck pad to avoid slipping. We recommend wearing slip resistant shoes to increase traction and to protect your feet when walking on rocks.

  7. HYPOTHERMIA
Dress properly for weather conditions and wear a wetsuit if necessary. SUP accidents in cold water are very dangerous. The loss of body heat due to immersion in cold water (hypothermia) can be fatal. Survival time in cold water can be as little as 15 to 20 minutes.

  8. BE ACCOMPANIED
Always paddle with someone. It is preferable to be accompanied in case of an emergency or accident. You should also be aware of the level of physical ability and medical conditions of people paddling with you. Always let someone know about your plan to go paddling, including your destination, how long you will be gone, and how many people will be with you.

  9. ALWAYS FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE BODY OF WATER YOU INTEND TO NAVIGATE
Scout unfamiliar water. Find out when boating is permitted, if there are any known hazardous conditions and where to get help quickly in the case of an emergency or accident. Check tidal changes and currents specific to your location. If you decide to go down rapids, scout them in advance and portage your SUP to avoid unfamiliar or dangerous areas if necessary.

  10. REGULATIONS AND LAWS
Always follow Coast Guard regulations, boating and safety laws, and regulations and orders of various levels of government (including regional). Consult the Coast Guard and government authorities on the proper handling of a SUP and the required safety equipment such as lighting and sound alarms.

  11. DRAIN PLUG
Make sure the drain plug is firmly in place before putting your SUP in the water. Empty water that has accumulated due to condensation or seepage once in a while.

  12. SELF PROTECTION
Wear appropriate safety gear. Always remember that you are putting yourself at risk of serious injury or death when you go down rapids. You must take the appropriate safety precautions, inspect your equipment thoroughly, and wear appropriate safety gear. We recommend always wearing a personal floating device and a helmet. We also strongly recommend wearing protection on your arms, legs, etc. It is your responsibility to have the proper equipment and familiarize yourself with the body of water where you will use your SUP.

  • NEVER let minors use this SUP without adult supervision.
  • NEVER tow this SUP behind a boat.
  • NEVER use this SUP as a personal floating device.
  • NEVER exceed this SUP's maximum weight.
