Acoustic Coupler. This is an
interfacing device whic h has a
place on top for cradlin g the
telephone handset. If yo ur
coupler has an ORIGINATE/A ,~Sv'/ER
switch, the position of th is
swit ch will depend on the mode
of the remote print er . For
example, if the remote printer
is in the originat e mode , the
Ofl I G INATEIANS Y~ER swit ch on yo ur
coupler must be in the ANSWER
posit ion.

acoustic coupler securing the
handset with the ho ld down
device on t he coupler .
b. Data Set. When using a Data Se t
the TAL K pushbutton must be
pressed, a nd a d i a l tone heard
before d i a lin g the remote
printer. Once connection has
been made at the other enJ, a
steaJy hi ]n pitched ton e wIll be
heard in your tel epho ne
r eceiver . Whe n t h is haopens ,
press the DATA pushbutton a nd
hang up the hand set.
c. DAA with internal modem. If your
printer nas this equipme nt, your
telep hone will look like an
ordinary te le phone except one o f
the pl ungers in t he handse t
crad l e will be a DATA butto n.
Since this type of int erfacing
equipment is pr imarily for use
in talking to a computer, you r

is permanently connected
in the originate mode .
Ih er efore , before communic ation
can be accomp lis hed with a
remote pr inter,
i t
must ha v e
interf acing equipment wh ic h is
conn ected in the answer mode.
The calling procedure is to dia l
tne rem ote prin ter, pu ll up the
DATA button wh en t he high
pit ched tone is heard, and then
l ay down the telephone handset
on the desk top until you have
finished talking to the remote
orinter. Do not hang up the
handset b efore communications
are compl ete since this
disconnects the telephone line.
Regard l ess of which type of
interfacing equipment you may nave ,
you wi ll know you are connected to
the other printer when the fl EADY
indica tor l i ght on your Printer is
on . When the READY light goes out ,
you have been disconnected from the
r emote pri nter.

4. Both your Print er and t he rernot
printer must be se t a t the sam
printin g speed. If your Printer
garbles or the interrupt light
constantly comes on when the remote
printer is se nding, try selecting
another speed by changing the
~ATE
swit ch . A pr ior agreement with the
rem ote party wi ll hel p avoid this
pro bl em.
5. Aft e r commun ication has been
estaolished with a remote printer ,
you should then set the left ha nd
margin on both your Print er and on
the remote printer . To do this follow
the ste ps listed below .
a. Press and hold the ESC key.
b. Pre ss and release the 2 key.
c. Release the ESC key.
d. Press a nd release the R~TUfiN
key.
The above sequence will c l ear all
horizontal tabs and set the left hand
margin at pos ition

on both
printers.

OPE RATION OF THE PA PER TAPE PUNCH
The bottom drawer in the desk, which is a
part of the Automat i c Send Receive (ASR)
model, cont ains the paper tape punch unit. To
prepare a paper tape, proceed as follows.

Tu rn on power . Use tne power switch
loc a ted on the upper right side of
the deSK knp.e hole. If powe r doesn't
come o n, check to See if the power
switch on the rignt rea r of the
Printer i s on . Also make certa i n the
desk power cord is plu gged into
a
wa 11 au tl et.
2. After power is on, press the ON
pushbutton on the face of the punch
drawer . (See Figure 51. The
pushbutton should light indic ating
the Punch is ready to use.
3. Press and hold the TAPE FEED
pushbutton . A "clicking" nois e will
be heard, and paper tape should start
feeding out of the front of the Punch
drawer. Allow t he tape to feed until
several inches of leader (tape with
only a row of sprocket holes) is
observed. This will clear any old
data that may have been left from a
previous user. Tear off the tape by
pulling straight up. If tape doesn't
feed out when the TAPE FEE
pushbutton is pressed , turn powe
off , and pullout the Punch d r a wer b
re l eas ing the l atch on t he right side
of the desk knee hole . Check to see
if pape r tape is properly installed
