Reverse gear

The HS1 reverse gear is hydraulic, which means that ahead/astern engagement and disengagement is hydrau-
lically activated. The reverse gear lubrication system has an oil filter and oil cooler.
IMPORTANT! Volvo Penta recommends the installation of a seawater filter to guarantee the proper cool-
ant water flow to the engine and reverse gear. Contaminants in the seawater will otherwise foul the re-
verse gear radiator and other cooling system components.

Oil level. Checking and topping up
Unscrew (counter clockwise) and remove the dip-
stick. Wipe off oil. Reinsert the dipstick in the re-
verse gear without screwing it in. Remove again
and check that the oil level is between the MAX and
MIN markings on the dipstick. Top up if necessary.
For oil grades and capacity: See the chapter "Tech-
nical Data".
IMPORTANT! Do not fill the oil above the MAX
level.
Oil change
Oil is sucked up using an oil scavenging pump
through the hole for the dipstick (1). Unscrew filter
(2). Check that the oil cooler mating surface is
clean. Moisten the new filter gasket with a little oil.
Screw on the new filter by hand until it is in contact
with the mating surface. And then a further half turn
but no more!
Collect up the old oil and filter for deposit at a
proper disposal site.
Top up oil to correct level. Start engine and run at
1500 rpm for a few minutes so the reverse gear oil
cooler is filled with oil. Stop engine and check oil
level. Top up if required. For oil grades and capaci-
ty: See the chapter "Technical Data".
