Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amoun
t
of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts
.
In order to provide effective lubr ication and cool-
ing of
int
ernal engine components, all internal
combustion eng ines consume a certain amou nt
of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine
t
o en-
gine and may change significant ly over the life of

t he engine. Typically, engines with a specified
break-in period (see

poge 177)
consume more
oil
dur ing the break-in per iod than they consume
after oil consumption has stabili zed
.
Under normal cond itions, the rate of oil
con-
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient tem-
perature and road condit ions. Further factors are
the amo unt of oil dilution from water condensa
-
t ion or fuel residue and the oxidation level of
t
he
oil.
As any engine is subject to wea
r
as mileage
builds up,

he
oil
consumption may increase
over

repla cement of worn components may
become necessary
