must be adjusted to an upright posit ion.

Make sure that the
PASSEN GER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on
.
A
WARNING
Rearward-facing child restra ints:
-
A ch ild in a rearward-facing child safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat will be
seriously injured and can be killed if the
front airbag inflates - even with an Ad-
vanced Airbag System.
-
The inflating a irbag w ill hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier
wit
h great force and
will smash the chi ld safety seat a nd child
against the backrest, cen
t
er armrest, door
or roof.

Always be especially careful if you must in-
sta ll a rearward facing child safety seat on
the front passenger seat in exceptional
cir-
cumstances
.
-
A tight
t
ether strap on a rearward-fac ing
child restraint attached to the front passen-
ger seat can put too much pressu re on the
weight-mat in the seat and register a heavi-
er we ight in the Advanced Airbag System.
The heav ier we ight registered can make the
system work as though an adult were on the
seat and deploy the Advanced Airbag when
it must be s uppressed causi ng serio us or
even fatal injury to
t
he child.

Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on.

If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does
not come on and stay on
,
immediately in-
sta ll the rearward-facing child safety seat in
a rear seating position and have the a irbag
system inspected by your authorized Audi
dealer
.

· Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to secure a
child restraint.
Always heed the ch ild safety seat manufacturer's
instruct ions when installing a child restra int in
your vehicle
.
To activate the convertible locking
retractor:

Place the child restraint on a seat, preferably
on the rear seat.
..
Slowly pull the belt
all th

way out
.

Route it around or through the child restra int
be lt path

Push the ch ild safety sea
t
down
wit
h yo
ur
full
weigh
t
to get the safety belt really tight.

Insert the be lt tong ue into the buckle for that
seating position
.

Guide the safety be lt back into the retracto
r
un-
til the belt lies flat and sn ug on the ch ild safety
seat.
..
You should hear a "cl icking" noise as the belt
winds back into the inertia reel. Test the con
-
vert ible locking retractor by pull ing on the belt.
You shou ld no lo nge

be able to pull the belt
out of the retracto
r.
The convertib le locking re-
tractor is now activa
t
ed.
..
Make sure that the red release button is facing
away from the chi ld restraint so that it can be
unbuckled quickly
.
..
Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt is
properly t ight and fastened so that the seat
cannot move forward or sideways more than
one inch (2 .5 cm)
.

WARNING
Using the wrong ch ild restraint or an improp-
e rly installed child restra int can cause serious
personal injury or death in a crash.
-
Always make sure that the safety be lt re-
tr actor is locked when installing a child
safety seat
.
An unlocked safety be lt retrac-
tor cannot hold the ch ild safety seat in place
during normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in
place even if a chi ld is not sitting in it. A
loose child safety seat can fly around during
a sudden stop or in a crash.
