Operation

Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the
normal operating position.
The backhoe controls consists of 4 levers and 1 button. The
left lever controls the boom and the swing; the 2 middle
levers control the left and right stabilizers, and the right lever
controls the dipper and the bucket. The farther you move a
lever beyond the Neutral position, the faster the component
responds. The E-stop knob is used to shut down the machine
in an emergency.

Using the Stabilizers

Controlling the Stabilizer Arms
You can control the stabilizer arms by moving the left
and right levers; refer to
Raising the Stabilizers (page 30)
and
Lowering the Stabilizers (page
downward lowers the stabilizer arms; moving the levers
upward raises the stabilizer arms.
Positioning the Stabilizer Arms
CAUTION
When excavating with a backhoe on a slope, one
stabilizer may be lower than the other, causing
an unstable setup that could result in a tip-over
accident.
Always dump the bucket and place the spoil on the
uphill side of the excavation.
Lower the stabilizer arms to remove the weight of the
backhoe from the front wheels, but keep at least 1 wheel
in light contact with the ground. This allows the widest
stance and a lower center of gravity for operating the
backhoe.
Keeping the front wheels low allows you to dig at a greater
depth and reduces the stress on the backhoe components.
On steep slopes, level the surface with a loader and place
the spoil pile on the downhill side of the slope. Pack the
spoil so that it supports the stabilizer arm going into it.
Use can also use this technique when you are excavating
near an obstruction, such as a wall, that is on the uphill
side of the excavation.
Raising the Stabilizers
Raise the stabilizers as follows:
1. Set the engine speed of the machine to 1/4 throttle
or higher.
2. Move to the backhoe operator's seat.
30). Moving the levers
3. Push the stabilizer control forward until the stabilizers
has removed the weight of the machine from the front
wheels slightly
(Figure

4. As necessary, adjust each stabilizer individually to level
the machine.
5. Release the stabilizer controls.
Lowering the Stabilizers
1. Set the engine speed of the machine to 1/2 to 3/4
throttle.
2. Move to the backhoe operator's seat.
3. Pull the stabilizer control backward until the stabilizer
has moved to the fully upright position
