    Getting Started If the battery pack is not pre-installed in the computer that you purchased, please install the battery pack before you start using the computer. Please refer to Chapter 6, information about installing the battery pack. All users should be sure to read the section Be sure to read the enclosed Instruction Manual for Safety and Comfort for information on the safe and proper use of this computer.

While holding down the palm rest with one hand so that the main body of the computer is not raised, slowly lift the display panel - this will allow the angle of the display panel to be adjusted to provide optimum clarity.

    Turning on the power This section describes how to turn on the power - the Power indicator light will then indicate the status. Please refer to the Monitoring of power condition section in Chapter 6, information. After you turn on the power for the first time, do not turn it off until you have set up the operating system.

    L500/L505/L500D/L505D Turning off the power The power can be turned off in one of three modes, either Shut Down Mode, Hibernation Mode or Sleep Mode. Shut Down Mode When you turn off the power in Shut Down Mode no data will be saved and the computer will boot to the operating system’s main screen the next time it is turned on.

    Benefits of Hibernation Mode The Hibernation Mode feature provides the following benefits: Saves data to the hard disk drive when the computer automatically shuts down because of a low battery condition.     L500/L505/L500D/L505D Sleep Mode If you have to interrupt your work, you are able to turn off the power without exiting from your software by placing the computer into Sleep Mode.     Operating Basics This chapter describes the basic operations of your computer and highlights the precautions that should be taken when using it. Using the Touch Pad To use the Touch Pad, simply touch and move your fingertip across it in the direction you want the on-screen pointer to go.

    L500/L505/L500D/L505D Touch Pad Gesture There are four convenient gestures that make users operate the system easier and faster. ChiralMotion You can scroll vertically and horizontally. To enable these features, select the Enable vertical scrolling and Enable horizontal scrolling check boxes. Click on the window or item you wish to scroll and slide your finger upwards or downwards along the right edge of the TouchPad to scroll vertically.

    When the disc tray is fully opened, the edge of the computer will extend slightly over the area where you insert the media. Therefore, when loading a CD or DVD, you will need to turn it slightly at an angle when you place it in the disc tray.

    CD-R/RW media cannot be accessed using the Create CD/DVD option in Media Center. To write data to CD-R/-RW media, use the TOSHIBA Disc Creator feature that is installed on your computer. When writing information to media using an optical drive, you should always ensure that you connect the AC adaptor to a live power socket.
