Removeyourfoot fromthe brakepedal.
4.
Releasepressurefromthe parkingbrakelever.
After completingstep 3, the brakepedalshouldremainin the down
position.If it doesn't,the parkingbrakeis notengaged.Repeatsteps
1-4to engagethe parkingbrake.
Todisengagethe parkingbrake,lightlypressthe brakepedal.
Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.AlwaysdisengagePTO,
set parkingbrake,stop engineand removekey to preventunintended
starting.
ENGAGING
THE PTO
Engagingthe PTOtransferspowerto the cuttingdeck or other
(separatelyavailable)attachments. T oengagethe PTO:
1.
Movethe throttlecontrol leverto the FAST(rabbit)position.
2.
Pull the PTO/BladeEngageknoboutwardintothe engaged(ON)
position.
NOTE:Alwaysoperatethe tractorwith the throttleleverin the FAST
(rabbit)positionforthe mostefficient useof the cuttingdeck or other
(separatelyavailable)PTOdrivenattachments.
MOWING
Tohelp avoidbladecontactor a thrownobject injury,keepbystand-
ers, helpers,childrenand pets at least 75 feet fromthe machine
whileit is in operation.Stop machineif anyoneentersthearea.
This tractorisequippedwith one of Craftsman'shighqualitycutting
decks.The followinginformationwill be helpfulwhenusingthe cutting
deck with yourtractor.
Do not mowat high groundspeed,especiallyif a mulch kit or
grasscollectoris installed.
For best resultsit is recommended that the firsttwo laps be cut
with the dischargethrowntowardsthe center.Afterthe first two
laps, reversethe directionto throwthe dischargeto the outside
for the balanceof cutting.This will givea betterappearanceto the
lawn.
Do notcut thegrass too short.Shortgrass invitesweedgrowth
and yellowsquicklyin dry weather.
Mowingshouldalwaysbe done withthe engineat full throttle.
Underheavierconditionsit may be necessaryto go back overthe
cut area a secondtime to geta cleancut.
Do notattemptto mow heavybrushand weedsand extremelytall
grass.Yourtractoris designedto mowlawns,notclear brush.
Keepthe bladessharpand replacethe bladeswhenworn.Refer
to the "Service& Maintenance" s ectionof this manualfor proper
bladesharpeninginstructions.
IMPORTANT: W henstoppingthe tractorfor anyreasonwhileon a
grasssurface,always:
1.
Engagethe parkingbrake.
2.
Shutengineoff and removethe key.
Doingso will minimizethe possibilityof havingyour lawn"browned"by
hotexhaustfrom yourtractor'srunningengine.
MOVING THE TRACTOR
MANUALLY
If for any reasonthe tractorwill not driveor you wish to movethe
tractor,engagethetwo transmissionreleaseleversto manuallymove
the tractorshort distances.
IMPORTANT: N evertow or drag thetractorwith the rear wheelson the
ground.Evenwith the releaseleversengaged.Doingso will damage
the transmissions.
Toengagea releaselever:
1.
Pullthe leverrearwardso that the elbowpassesthroughthe
larger/rounded part of the keyholeslot.
2.
With the elbowof the leveroutside (rearward)of the hitch plate,
pushthe leverinwardin the small partof the keyholeslot so that
lever'selbowis lockedagainstthe back of the hitchplate.
3.
Repeatto engagethe otherreleaseleverto allowthe tractorto be
manuallymoved.See Figure6.

To movethetractormanually,the brakemustbe disengagedby
releasingthe parkingbrakeand depressingthe forwardor reverse
drive pedal.Continueto hold thedrive pedalwhilepushing.
5.
Todisengage,movethe leverto align its elbowwith the larger/
roundedpart of the keyholeslot and releasethe leverback
throughthehitch plate.
NOTE:The transmission will NOTengagewhenthe releaseleveris
pulledout. Returnthe leverto its normalpositionpriorto operatingthe
tractor.
HEADLIGHTS
The tractorheadlights are turnedon whenever the ignitionswitchis
turnedto eitherof the run positions.
