12 Operating the Hedge Trimmer

► Press the trigger.
The release slide can be released.
► Release the trigger and the Ergo lever.
► If the release slide, trigger or the Ergo lever is
stiff or does not spring back to the idle posi‐
tion: Do not use the long-reach hedge trimmer
and contact your STIHL dealer for assistance.
The release slide, trigger or the Ergo lever is
defective.
Switching on the long-reach hedge trimmer
► Insert battery.
► Push the release slide in the direction of the
cutting blades and hold it there.
► Press and hold the trigger.
The cutting blades run.
► If 3 LEDs flash red: Remove the battery and
consult a STIHL dealer.
There is a malfunction in the long-reach hedge
trimmer.
► Release the trigger.
The cutting blades stop running after about 1
second.
► If the cutting blades continue to run after about
1 second: Remove the battery and contact
your STIHL dealer for assistance.
There is a malfunction in the long-reach hedge
trimmer.

Testing the Battery
► Press button on battery.
The LEDs glow or flash.
► If the LEDs do not glow or flash: Do not use
the battery and contact your STIHL servicing
dealer.
There is a malfunction in the battery.

12.1
Adjusting the Angle of the Cut‐
ting Blades
The angle of the cutting blades can be adjusted
to 2 different positions upwards and 3 different
positions downwards to suit the application and
the height and reach of the user.
► Switch off the long-reach hedge trimmer and
remove the battery.

► Pull back the sliding sleeve (1) and hold it
there.
► Grip the swivel handle (2) and swing cutting
blade to required angle.
► Release the sliding sleeve (1).
► Move swivel handle (2) back and forth until the
sliding sleeve (1) engages.
The sliding sleeve (1) butts against the hous‐
ing. You have adjusted the angle of the cutting
blades.
► Check that the swivel handle (2) cannot be
pushed in or pulled out any more.
12.2
Adjusting the Shaft Length
(HLA 86)
The shaft can be adjusted to different lengths to
suit the application as well as the user's height
and reach.
► Switch off the long-reach hedge trimmer and
remove the battery.

► Maintain an angle of no more than 45° to the
horizontal.
► Turn the clamp nut (1) a half-rotation

► Adjust the shaft (2) to the required length.
► Turn the clamp nut (1) in direction as far as it
will go.
► Make sure the shaft (2) cannot be pushed in
or pulled out any more.
The shaft length is properly adjusted if the
shaft (2) cannot be pushed in or pulled out any
more.
