Important safety information

Please read this and the online guide(s) at support.aeotec.com/nanoshutter carefully. Failure to follow the recommendations set forth by Aeotec Limited may be dangerous or cause a violation of the law. The manufacturer, importer, distributor, and / or reseller will not be held responsible for any loss or damage resulting from not following any instruction in this guide or in other materials.

Only a licensed electrician with knowledge and understanding of electrical systems and safety should complete the installation.

The maximum amperage rating for Nano Shutter is 2.5A for each slot and 5A for both when connecting a motor load (COSφ=0.4, L/R=7ms)

Nano Shutter is intended for indoor use in dry locations only. Do not use in damp, moist, and / or wet locations.

Pre-installation checks

Nano Shutter only works when installed with a neutral wire. If there no neutral wire is available, a professional electrician will be required to wire a neutral at the installation location.

Quick start

The following will step you through installing Nano Shutter and connecting it to your Z-Wave network.

  1. If your Z-Wave gateway supports SmartStart, scan the QR code on Nano Shutter using the gateway's appropriate app. After you complete the following installation steps and power on the Nano Shutter, your Nano Shutter will join your Z-Wave network automatically within 10 minutes. If your Z-Wave gateway does not support SmartStart, continue to the next step.
  2. Turn off electricity to the switch at the circuit breaker.
warning Note: For safety, your home's main circuit breaker must support overload protection.
  3. Remove and unwire existing wall switch that Nano Shutter will be install behind.
    1. Ensure the wires are not short-circuited during the installation to avoid causing damage to Nano Shutter.
    2. Ensure that the gang box Nano Shutter will be installed in is at least 3×2×2.75 inches / 75×50×70mm or larger; the minimum volume is 14 in3 / 230cm3.
  4. Prepare connection wires. Use flexible copper wires only.
    • 4 AWG power wires for Input/ Output.
    • 18 AWG copper wires for external manual switch.
    • Use wire stripper to expose 5mm of wire.

Notes for the wire connection ports:

N – Power input for neutral
L – Power input for live
IN – Input for load power supply
OUT1 – Output for Motor direction 1
OUT2 – Output for Motor direction 2
S1 – External Switch/button 1 control for Motor
S2 – External Switch/button 2 control for Motor

  1. Wire Nano Shutter into its gang box. Nano Shutter will be wired as per Diagram 3.
    1. Live/Hot wire connection: Connect the Live/Hot wire to the "L" terminal on Nano Shutter and bridge "L" to "IN" with a short wire.
    2. Neutral wire connection: Connect the Neutral wire to the "N" terminal on Nano Shutter.
    3. Load wire connection: Connect the 2 Load wires (Motor direction 1 and Motor direction 2) to the "OUT1" and "OUT2" on Nano Shutter.
    4. Load wire connection: Connect the Neutral wire to the "Neutral" terminal on Motor.
    5. External/manual Switch connection: Connect 2x18AWG wires to the "S1" and "S2" on Nano Shutter.
    6. External/manual Switch connection: Connect 2x18AWG wires from the 2 terminals on the External/manual Switch to the Live wire.

Nano Shutter will be physically wired as in Diagram 4 when wiring is completed.

  1. Mounting the gang box.
    1. Organize all wires to provide room for Nano Shutter.
    2. Place Nano Shutter inside of the gang box with the antenna towards the back of the box and away from all other wires.
    3. Re-attach the gang box's cover.

  2. Turn on electricity to switch at circuit breaker or fuse.
  3. If your Z-Wave gateway does not support SmartStart:
    1. Set your Z-Wave gateway into its 'add device' mode in order to connect Nano Shutter to your Z-Wave system. Refer to the gateway's manual if you are unsure of how to perform this step.
    2. Toggle the external switch wired to Nano Shutter once. Alternatively, if Nano Shutter is still exposed, press its Action Button.
    3. If your Z-Wave gateway supports S2 encryption and DSK, enter the first 5 digits of the DSK into your gateway's interface if / when requested. The DSK is printed on Nano Shutter's case.
  4. When Nano Shutter successfully joins your Z-Wave network, its LED will turn blue. Should Nano Shutter's LED turn red for 2 seconds and then alternate through a rainbow of colors it has failed to join your Z-Wave network; repeat steps 6 to 7 and please contact us for further support if needed.

Nano Shutter is now a part of your Z-Wave home control system. You can configure it and its automations via your Z-Wave system; please refer to your software's user guide for precise instructions.
