5. Operating Principle Resistance thermometers work by using the continuous change of resistance of metals subject to temperature rising and decreasing. The most common resistance material used is platinum, as it is very stable and has very good repeatability. The temperature coefficient of platinum is positive, so its resistance increases as the temperature rises.
