TV OPERATION
WHAT IS CLOSED CAPTIONING?
T his te levision ha s the ca pa bility to de code a nd display
C lose d C a ptioned te levision progra m s. C lose d
C aptioning will display text on the scree n for he a ring
im pa ire d viewe rs or it will transla te a nd display text in
a nothe r la ngua ge.
CLOSED CAPTIONING WITH A VCR
C lose d C a ptioned progra m s ca n be re corde d a nd playe d
back on a V C R with the C lose d C a ptione d text intact.
T he C lose d C a ptione d text will disa ppe a r during C ue
(Fa st Forwa rd S e a rch), R eview (R ewind S e a rch) and
Pa use M odes or if the V C R tra cking is not a djusted
prope rly.
TO VIEW CLOSED CAPTIONS
P ress the T V /C AP /T E X T button on the re m ote control to
switch be twe e n norm a l T V a nd the two C lose d C aption
M odes (C a ptions a nd F ull S cre e n Text).
Captions: T his C lose d C a ption M ode will display text
on the scre e n in E nglish or anothe r la ngua ge (depend-
ing on the se tting of the C lose d C a ptions C H . C hannel 1
or C ha nne l 2 ).
G e ne ra lly, C lose d C aptions in E nglish a re tra nsm itted
on C aptions C ha nnel 1 a nd C lose d C a ptions in other
la ngua ge s a re tra nsm itte d on C a ptions C ha nne l 2.
• W he n se le cting C lose d C a ptions, the ca ptioning will be delayed approxim ately 10 seconds.
• If no ca ption signa l is re ce ive d, no captions will appear, but the television will rem ain in the C aption M ode.
• M isspe llings or unusua l cha ra cte rs m ay occasionally appe ar during C losed C aptioning. T his is norm al with
C lose d C a ptioning, e spe cia lly with live program s. T his is because during live program s, captions are also
e nte re d live. T he se tra nsm issions do not a llow tim e for editing.
• W he n the on-scre e n indica tor a ppea rs during volum e adjustm ent operation, etc., C losed C aption text will not
be displaye d.
• S om e ca ble syste m s a nd copy prote ction system s m ay interfere with the C losed C aptioned signal.
• If using a n indoor a ntenna or if T V re ce ption is very poor, the C losed C aption D ecoder m ay not appear or
m ay a ppe ar with stra nge cha ra cte rs or m isspelled words. In this case, adjust the antenna for better reception
or use a n outdoor a ntenna.

Text: T he Text C losed C aption M ode will usually fill the
screen with a programming schedule or other information.
After selecting a C losed C aption M ode, it will stay in
effe ct until it is changed, even if the channel is changed.
If the C a ptions signal is lost due to a com m ercial or a
break in the signal, the C aptions will reappea r when the
signa l is received again.
If the channels are changed, the C aptions will be delayed
approxim ately 10 seconds.
T he C aptions will a ppear in places on the screen where
they will least interfere with the picture, usually on the
bottom of the scre en. N ews program s will usually show
three-line C lose d C aptions which scroll onto the screen.
M ost other shows provide two or three lined C aptions
place d near the character who is speaking so the viewer
can follow the dialogue.
W ords in italics or underlined de scribe titles, words in
foreign languages or words requiring em phasis. W ords
that are sung usually appear enclosed by m usical notes.
For television progra m s broadcasting with C losed C ap-
tions, look in your T V guide for the C losed C a ptions
sym bol (C C ).
