How Do SteriPEN® Purifiers Work?
SteriPEN® uses shortwave germicidal Ultraviolet (UV) light to disinfect water. This UV-C range of UV light disrupts the DNA of microbes in seconds. Without intact DNA, microbes cannot reproduce to make you sick. SteriPEN® purifiers may be used on any source of fresh water in any country.

The SteriPEN® Sidewinder is a hand-powered, battery-free UV water purifier. It will purify one liter (32 oz.) of water in 90 seconds in the included bottle. The UV lamp will provide 8,000 treatments. If or when you've completed your 8,000th purification, contact our technical services department to arrange for a new lamp.*

Directions for Use 40 C.F.R. _156.10(i)(2)(ii)
It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. 40 C.F.R. _156.10(i)(2)(ii).

SteriPEN® exceeds U.S. EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers, destroying over 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses, and 99.9% of protozoa (i.e. giardia and cryptosporidium) when used as directed. SteriPEN® is not a sterilizer.

Operating the SteriPEN® Sidewinder

SteriPEN® Sidewinder treats 1.0 liter (32 oz.) of water

Fill bottle to 1 L (32 oz); smaller volumes may result in water droplets above the water surface that are not purified.
In an emergency, where less than 1 liter of water is available, ensure that (a) water covers lamp and (b) during the purification process, periodically swirl the water around the inside of the bottle to incorporate any water droplets into the water volume being purified. In such an emergency situation, treat the water twice.

Quick Start Guide

Use SteriPEN® with clear, fresh (non-salt) water. Discolored or dirty water should be pre-filtered until clear prior to SteriPENi ® treatment. Use SteriPEN® Pre-Filter or FitsAll Filter. Coffee filters or a clean bandana/cloth may also be used to pour water through and remove particulates.

Remove the UV Lamp Protector prior to using the SteriPEN® Sidewinder.

Quick Start Guide

  1. FILL BOTTLE
Fill bottle to 1 liter (32 oz.) volume, wipe bottle threads to remove water droplets. (Diagram A) If Pre-Filter is used, remove Pre-Filter prior to wiping bottle threads.
  2. ATTACH SIDEWINDER
Firmly screw Sidewinder to bottle mouth threads. (Diagram B)
(Suggestion: place filled bottle on surface and turn the bottle in a counterclockwise direction to screw the bottle into the Sidewinder to form a watertight seal between Sidewinder and bottle mouth.)
  3. FLIP
Flip or invert the Sidewinder and bottle assembly and unfold the crank arm & handle. Flipping the assembly causes the water to immerse the UV lamp and water sensor pins. (Diagram C)
    1. Agitate water by swirling water around UV lamp to create a vortex. Agitation will ensure that the entire volume is uniformly purified by your Sidewinder's germicidal UV light.
  4. CRANK/WIND
While water is still in motion begin cranking/winding. Crank rotation may be in clockwise or counter-clockwise direction-use right or left hand. (Diagram D). Your energy powers the UV lamp. Note: If visible light is not evident, the SteriPEN UV lamp is not on, and water should not be consumed.
    1. Sidewinder position can vary: with both hands, hold unit on your lap, in the air or rest on a surface. Natural rocking while cranking generates beneficial agitation.
    2. If the LED indicator lights are flashing red, you are not cranking fast enough. The optimum speed is 2 revolutions per second or faster. The UV lamp is programmed to purify the water for 90 seconds. Cranking faster will not reduce the time.
    3. You may pause for up to 8 seconds during the process-this allows you to switch hands or pass the unit over to a friend to share the cranking. The pause time begins when the LEDs start flashing red. If you do not resume cranking while the LEDs are flashing, you will need to restart the 90 second purification process.
  5. PURIFICATION COMPLETE
Successful purification is complete when the Indicator LEDs flash green. At the end of the 90-second purification process the UV lamp will turn off and the user will notice a reduced tension in the crank handle. The LED will flash green for few seconds after user stops cranking. A subsequent treatment can begin after the LED stops flashing.
  6. AFTER PURIFICATION COMPLETE
Flip bottle and Sidewinder right-side up and remove SteriPEN® Sidewinder from bottle. Dry off lamp and water sensors with clean cloth and place UV Lamp Protector over the lamp (Diagram E). Prior to drinking, wipe the bottle threads to ensure that no unpurified water droplets are consumed.

Safety and Operating Tips

Water Containers
SteriPEN® Sidewinder should be used with the included 1 liter TritanTM BPA-free bottle to ensure a tight fit. Most Nalgene® wide-mouth BPA-free bottles will also work.

Water Sense Circuitry
SteriPEN® Sidewinder's water sense circuitry is intended to prevent the UV lamp from illuminating unless it is completely immersed in water.

Cold Weather Considerations
Bring SteriPEN® up to a temperature above 32ºF/0ºC before using.

Care and Cleaning
When not in use, SteriPEN® should be kept in a clean, dry, nonabrasive area or container. SteriPEN® should not be exposed to ambient temperatures above 140ºF/60ºC or below -4ºF/-20ºC.
To clean SteriPEN®, wipe dry with a soft cloth. Note that, other than areas normally in contact with water during use, the Sidewinder is not water proof and should therefore never be submerged.

Lamp Life
The SteriPEN Sidewinder's UV lamp provides 8,000 treatments. Incomplete treatments count as 1 treatment regardless of duration. After lamp life equals 8,000 treatments, lamps must be replaced by manufacturer or licensed technician. Contact HPI Technical Support: support@steripen.com.

Treating Turbid, Murky or Cloudy Water
SteriPEN® Sidewinder is intended for use, and is most effective, in clear water. However, SteriPEN has been shown to reduce microbial contamination in turbid water. If clear water is not available, first try to filter the water to clarify it. The SteriPEN® Pre-Filter, SteriPEN® FitsAll Filter, a coffee filter or a clean cloth may be used to pour water through and remove particulates.

If it is necessary to treat turbid, murky or cloudy water in an emergency situation, use SteriPEN® Sidewinder as follows:

  • To treat 1 liter (32 oz.) of turbid* water in emergencies, use two treatments (90 seconds each).

* Turbidity is a measure of water clarity as affected by the presence of suspended solids. As turbidity increases, the suspended solids and murkiness of the water also increase. It is difficult to communicate a particular level of turbidity with just a written description. Accordingly, please take into account the following when considering the use of SteriPEN® in water that is not clear. If viewing treatable turbid water in a clear 1 liter bottle, one might characterize the water as follows: As cloudy as weak lemonade, Much closer to clear than opaque, Obviously not clear, Obviously cloudy, Objects viewed through the water are visible but blurry.
If your water is more turbid than described above, let the water in your bottle stand still to allow some of the fine particulates to settle to the bottom. Next, pour this less turbid water into another container to purify.

Laboratory testing has shown that a SteriPEN purifier is effective in water with a turbidity of "not less than 30 ntu" (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) as described in the U.S. EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers, section 3.3.4. SteriPEN UV purifiers have been successfully tested in water with a turbidity measurement of 33 ntu.

Troubleshooting

If water leaks out after inverting bottle, return bottle to right-side up and remove Sidewinder. Next, rethread the bottle onto the Sidewinder; there should be no leaking of water in the inverted position.
