Compressor
overheating (cont.)
Compressor fails to
maintain working
pressure.
Interstage pressure
reading too high
(1st stage relief valve
exhausting).
Possible Cause
(5) Main delivery pipework
blocked or restricted.
(6) Faulty unloading
(particularly on 2nd stage
cylinders). 1st stage
temperature gauge reading
will increase when
compressor is running
unloaded.
(1) Incorrect setting of governor
or pressure switch.
(2) Compressor air intake
blocked or partially
obstructed.
(3) Faulty unloading preventing
compressor from coming
on load.
(4) Valves faulty.
(5) Leaks in user's pipework.
(6) The air demand of the
installation exceeds the
rating of the compressor.
(7) Compressor running under
speed.
(8) Worn or broken piston rings.
(1) 1st stage safety valve faulty.
(2) 2nd stage valves faulty.
(3) Intercooler passages
obstructed (usually only
after very long service).

Remedy
(5) Remove pipework and inspect.
Rectify if necessary. Check that
bore is of adequate diameter.
(6) Check operation of unloader
mechanism. Ensure that
unloader fork travels its full
distance to open suction valve
plate completely.
(1) Adjust settings to achieve
correct pressure.
(2) Inspect air intake filter for
cleanliness and serviceability.
Renew element if necessary.
(3) Check operation of unloader
mechanism.
(4) Remove valves. Inspect valve
plates, springs and seats.
Check condition of ring joints.
Renew as necessary.
(5) Check for leaks.
(6) Check compressor is in good
condition. (A slow fall in delivery
pressure when running on full
load indicates that the
compressor is not large enough
for the installation).
(7) Check drive motor speed.
Rectify as necessary .
(8) Inspect piston rings and
cylinders.
(1) Check setting of safety valve.
Adjust as necessary. Setting
should be 3.1 bar.
(2) Remove valves. Inspect valve
plates, springs and seats.
Check condition of ring joints.
Renew as necessary.
(3) Clean intercooler internally and
externally.
