  • Page 2 GUITAR SYNTHESIZER VERVIEW The new Roland GR-30 is Roland’s most powerful GR to date, featuring 384 high quality sounds and 256 patches. It includes an Arpeggiator (designed just for guitar), Synth Harmonist, Multiple Effects and Roland’s exclusive high speed tracking. All 384 sounds were created exclusively for the GR-30 with the guitarist in mind. The GR-30’s 28 notes of polyphony accommodate even the most extensive sounds like layers and splits.

    1997 Guitar Regional Training RONT ANEL PPER ECTION Three-digit Indicator In the Play mode (the mode at start-up), this three-place indicator displays the patch numbers. In the Edit mode, it displays the values and settings status of the currently selected item. Various other messages are also displayed here.
  • Page 4 This button switches between the Play mode and the Edit mode. Pressing the button while you are in the Play mode switches the GR-30 to the Edit mode, enabling each dial to select various settings, and allowing you to create and save sounds, adjust sensitivity, and so on. Pressing the but- ton again returns the unit to the Play mode.

The center marking provides an easy refer- ence setting when connecting to an instrument amp or mixer. * The output level from the GUITAR OUT jack is controlled separately.
  • Page 6 GR-30 Guitar Synthesizer RONT ANEL OUR CONT EDAL ECTION Foot Pedals These are four foot-operated switches. In the Play mode, together with the GK-2A’s “S1,” they are used mainly to switch patches. After pressing the GK-2A’s “S2” to go into Pedal Effect mode, you can step on the switch to get performance effects such as wah, pitch glide, and hold.

    1997 Guitar Regional Training ANEL ECTION 11 12 13 14 10. MIX OUT Jack L-MIXOUT-R/PHONES (PHONES) The output of the synthesizer is sent out here. Ordinarily, two cables are plugged into the L and R jacks, and the signal is then sent to a stereo amplifier. Furthermore, since both of the L and R jacks accept standard stereo plugs, they can also be used as two headphone jacks.
  • Page 8 18. AC Adaptor Jack/Cord Hook The AC adaptor included with the GR-30 plugs in here. Additionally, hanging the adaptor cord on the cord hook can help prevent the cord from accidentally being pulled out of the jack while you are playing.
  • Page 9 Setting the string sensitivity is very important in order to insure accurate tracking. To perform properly, each string should be adjusted so that it is not too hot or too weak in amplitude. Use the Dial on the right hand side of the GR-30 to select PICKUP SENS (1-6). Press the EDIT/PLAY button.

  • Page 11 FRONT PANEL METHOD Changing patches on the GR-30 can be done by pressing the Patch buttons, the pedals or the GK-2A S1/S2 buttons. To scroll through the patches consecutively, press the Patch [+] button to scroll forward (A11, A12, A13, etc.), and the Patch [-] button to scroll backwards (A13, A12, A11, etc.).
  • Page 12 LAYING THE ARMONIST The GR-30 has a synth harmonist that allows you to choose a key and add correct harmonies from a single note. You can build up to 3 part harmony when including the original guitar signal. Here’s a couple patches that include the harmonist: Rock Duo “C”...
  • Page 13 UNE THE UITAR The GR-30 includes a built-in chromatic tuner which can be accessed with the EDIT/PLAY and PATCH buttons. Press the EDIT/PLAY and PATCH [-] buttons simultaneously. Play each string individually. The number indicates the string you are playing and the letter indicates the note name.
  • Page 14 The Roland GR-30 includes a built in arpeggiator that functions as a Independent String Sequencer. You can pro- gram patterns like that of a right hand fingerstyle guitarist, and the GR-30 will play the pattern back while you strum chords or play melodic lines.
  • Page 15 EMONSTRATE THE YNTH ARMONIST The GR-30 also includes an Intelligent Pitch Shifter that will create 2 part harmonies on top of the original guitar sig- nal for 3 part diatonic triads. Check it out! Rock Duo “C” This patch adds harmony in the Key of C/Am.

    ATCH The GR-30 will also allow you to use two tones to create a split patch. This means you can divide the guitar strings into two different sounds. For instance, you could have B3 Organ assigned to strings 1 through 4, and an Upright Bass to strings 5 and 6.
  • Page 17 1997 Guitar Regional Training ROGRAMMING THE RPEGGIATOR You can record up to 32 note entries using 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, Triplets, or Shuffle Triplets in Step Time or Real Time. The parameters that are included in the arpeggiator are Arpeggio, A-Rhythm, A-Duration, A-Tempo. Use the following procedure to program an arpeggio in real time: Call up Patch E52 Nylon Guitar/Strings.

    GT-5 Guitar Effects Processor ETTING THE LOBAL UNCTIONS It’s always a good idea to set the global functions to match your amplification. These settings will effect all patches in the GT-5. The global functions are located under UTILITY. Use the following procedures to set the global amplifica- tion setting and speaker simulator function: Press UTILITY.

Use the following procedure to turn effects on and off: Press the effect select button that corresponds with the type of effect you wish to turn on. Press the effect again to turn the effect On or Off.

Each of the preamps contain their own independent tone controls that func- tion the same as the original models.
