How to Calibrate Your Home Theater
Using
Harman Kardon's EzSet remote makes it possible to quickly and accurately set
an AVR or DPR receiver's output levels without the use of a sound pressure meter.
Step 1:
Make certain that all speaker positions have been properly configured for their "large," "small" or
"none" settings.
Step 2:
Adjust the master volume to "–10dB." If, after completing the procedure, you find that the overall system
volume level seems low, you may repeat the procedure using a slightly higher master volume level.
However, in order to avoid the risk of damaging your hearing or your equipment, do not, under any
circumstances, exceed a master volume of 0dB.
Step 3:
Set the surround sound mode to "Dolby* Pro Logic* II – Movie. "
Step 4:
While seated in the listening position that will be used most often, hold the EzSet remote at arm's length,
making sure that it is pointed at the receiver, and tilted upward at a 45-degree angle. Make sure that the
sensor microphone at the top of the remote is not covered.
Step 5:
Press and hold the SPL Select button for three seconds. Release the button when the SPL indicator stops
flashing. For 7.1-channel receivers, press "5" or "7" to indicate whether your system uses 5.1 or 6.1/7.1
speakers.
You'll hear the test tone from the front left speaker.
Step 6:
At this point, the EzSet circuitry takes over, adjusting the output level of each channel so that all levels will
be equal when heard from the listening position.
During the adjustment process, you will see the location of the channel position being adjusted in both the on-screen
display (if connected) and the front-panel information display, together with a readout of the output level setting.
While the level is changing, the Program/SPL indicator on the remote will change colors to reflect the output level's
relation to the reference sound pressure level programmed into the remote at the factory. Red indicates that the level
is too high, while amber shows that the level is too low. When the indicator is green, the level is correct and the test
noise will move on to the next channel. After the test noise has circulated through each channel once, it will circulate
again to verify the settings. After two complete circulations of the test tone, the levels are set and the receiver will
return to normal operation.
Output levels may also be set manually, using either the EzSet remote or a separate SPL meter.
For further information on using the EzSet remote,
please consult your owner' s manual . For an interactive
demo, visit www.harmankardon.com.
Receivers equipped with the LCD remote, such as the DPR 1001, DPR 2001 and AVR 7200, require the user to follow the instructions that appear in the LCD display.
