LCD Remote Control With Built-In SPL Meter
At Harman Kardon, making great sounding high-performance
audio/video products isn't enough – we want them to be easy
to set up and use. In today's world of multichannel audio, the
ever-expanding number of surround modes and configuration
options can overwhelm consumers, to the point where they
back off from purchases. To make it as easy as possible to
manage the incredible power and flexibility of our receivers,
Harman Kardon has developed products such as our
(patent no. 5,386,478) system, which takes the hassle out
of setting output levels by doing the job for you automatically.
The remote control included with our new DPR 1001 and AVR 7200 receivers takes ease
and flexibility to the next level thanks to a two-line LCD display. Although the remote's
many features are detailed here, we want to focus on one particularly important feature.
While EzSet does a quick and accurate job of setting output levels, many home theater
enthusiasts want to fine-tune those settings even further, often using a test disc rather
than the receiver's built-in test tone. Previously, that kind of adjustment would have required
the purchase of a separate Sound-Pressure Level (SPL) meter. SPL meters are popular,
but they're often an expensive proposition.
The LCD remote that comes with these two new models may be used not only for
automatic EzSet adjustments but as an SPL meter. Simply by pressing a few buttons,
the remote becomes a highly accurate direct readout digital SPL meter equal to
those costing up to $100.
To use the DPR 1001 or AVR 7200 remote as a manual SPL meter, press the "SPL"
button and release it when the SET button turns red. Within five seconds, press the
button until the lower line of the display reads MANUAL SPL, and then press the
SET button. When the SPL readout appears in the lower-right corner of the display,
you're ready to go! Make adjustments as needed, and simply press the CLEAR button
when you're finished to return to normal operation.
The DPR 1001 and AVR 7200 are Harman Kardon's latest flagship products, and
the remote that accompanies them is our best yet.

Harman Kardon ends that confusion with its LCD remote by making it possible to easily change the name of each source device, so that, for example, when the “VID 3”...
