valves. Rotate the shaft, if possible, to allow any air trapped in the impeller
passages to escape.
 If the pump operates on a suction lift and a foot valve is included in the
system, fill the pump and the suction line with liquid from an outside source.
Trapped air should be allowed to escape through the vent valve while filling.
 If the pump operates on a suction lift and no foot valve is provided, use a
vacuum pump or ejector operated by air, steam, and water etc .to evacuate air
from the pump case and suction line by connecting the ejector to the priming
connection on top of the pump case
 Start the driver –this should be done as per the recommendations of the motor and
its control/switch gear manufacturers
 After the pump has attained full speed, open the discharge valve. This should be
done slowly in order to brings gradual load on the driver, and to prevent
development of water hammer in the distribution system. This is especially
important, as water hammer can cause serious damage to the piping and other
equipment in the installation.
 Do not operate pump for prolonged periods with closed discharge valve, so as to
avoid overheating.

5.3. RUNNING

While the pump is running at its rated speed and check the following periodic
inspection.
1. Stuffing box (soft packed pumps only). Ensure there is sufficient leakage to
lubricate the packing
2. Bearings. Check the bearing Temperature, which should not exceed pumped
liquid temperature of 80 degree C whichever is lower.
3. With mechanical seal fitted pumps, check that there is no leakage from the
stuffing box
4. Suction and discharge gauge reading.
5. Check Noise level as per the STD
6. Check Vibration level as per the STD
7. Check the liquid capacity delivered as per the order
8. Check the liquid pressure delivered as per the order.
The pumps should be shut down at once for the above reasons are not given
properly. And after corrected the troubles the pump should start again and check the above
points.

5.4. SHUTDOWN


Close the discharge valve

Stop the driver

Shut off external sealing liquid if supplied, to relieve stuffing box pressure.

Close the valve in the pump suction line, if fitted.
