At the timing rate of 1 MHz (1 microsecond) provided by
the Basic Counter Unit, the readings can be converted to:
Counter 8:
9,926 seconds
Counter 9:
1,432 seconds
Counter 10:
2,418 seconds
Counter 11:
2,944 seconds
Counter 12:
3,132 seconds
The measured function can

Additional functions may be derived by using the
formulas in Example 1. The numeric values shown in this
example are for illustration only and are not to be
interpreted as standard cases.
Example 4
The IBM 2314 Direct Storage Facility Model A1 or 1
contains eight separate modules. In a case study, the IBM
System/360 Operating System for an IBM System/360
Model 50 was resident on two 2314 modules.
Objective
Measure the percentage of time that the two system
residence modules of the 2314 are used and the percentage
of time that the CPU is waiting for the system residence
modules. For comparative purposes, measurements are
made of the following other functions: total wait, any
channel busy, selector channel 1 time (2314 residence), and
total elapsed time.

Summary
The counter results are as follows:
Counter 8:
395,044,983
Counter 9:
161,597,391
Counter 10:
92,214,125
Counter 11:

Counter 12:
41,501,691
Counter 13:

At a timing rate of 1 MHz (1 microsecond) provided by
the Basic Counter Unit, the readings can be converted to:
Counter 8:
395.0 seconds
Counter 9:
161.6 seconds
Counter 10:
92.2 seconds
Counter 11:
47.0 seconds
Counter 12:
41.5 seconds
Counter 13:
73.9 seconds
The measured system function can also be expressed in
percentages:
395.0 seconds
Total elapsed time
Total wait
161.6 seconds
Total any channel
92.2 seconds
Total system residence
47.0 seconds
System residence and wait
41.5 seconds
Selector channel 1 busy
73.9 seconds
Because this example measures only a portion of the total
operation (channel time), the individual times do not add
up to the total elapsed time. Other desired functions, such
as compute only, must be calculated by using the formulas
in Example 1. The numeric values shown in the examples
are for illustration only and are not to be interpreted as
standard cases.
