    :: DVD Recording FAQ Before you start using the R6540, please take a few moments to review these Frequently Asked Questions. They will help you become acquainted with the technology and the capabilities of the DVD Recorder: What can I record with my DVD recorder?
  • Page 7 Will my DVDs be compatible in other players? Yes. If you finalize the DVD it will be compatible with virtually all new DVD players. How do I hide commercials on my recorded shows? The Hide and Show Chapter features are useful for hiding com- mercials or unwanted footage from your recordings.

    :: Player Overview Front Panel Controls 1 Power button Press to power on the DVD Recorder. • When the power is on, use the On/Standby button on the remote control to turn the unit on and off. • When the power is off, the unit is effectively disconnected from the wall outlet.

    Front Panel Display 1 MP3 Indicator Lights when a CD-R or CD-RW with MP3 Tracks is loaded. 2 Repeat Status Indicator Lights when a disc is in Repeat or AB Repeat mode. 3 Channel Indicator Lights when a TV channel is selected. 4 Dolby Digital Indicator Lights when a DVD with a Dolby Digital soundtrack is loaded.

    Remote Control 1 On/Standby Press to switch the DVD Recorder between On and Standby (low power) modes. The Power button on the front panel must be pressed in for this button to work. 2 Prog. Scan Press to switch the video output between Progressive Scan and Interlace Scan.

    Rear Panel 1 Antenna In Connect to your antenna, cable TV, or cable box with a coaxial cable. 2 Out to TV Connect to the Antenna Input on older televisions with a coaxial cable. 3 Line In 2 (Composite Video/Stereo Audio Inputs) Connect to the audio/video outputs of an external source (such as a cable box or VCR) with RCA cables.

    Chapter 2 :: Basic Connections Connecting the R6540 is virtually the same as connecting a standard VCR. Follow these steps to connect the DVD Recorder to your TV and antenna/basic cable. For advanced connections, please refer to pages 15-20. 1 Connect Antenna/Cable Connect the RF cable from your antenna or basic cable TV jack to the ANTENNA IN jack on the back panel of the DVD Recorder.

Your television must be equipped with an S-Video input. 1 Connect S-Video to TV Connect an S-Video cable from the S-VIDEO OUT jack on the back panel of the DVD Recorder to the S-Video input on your television.

    Component Video/Progressive Scan Connections Use for superior picture quality when watching DVD movies. Your television must be equipped with Component Video or Progressive Scan inputs. 1 Connect Component Video to TV Connect a component video cable from the PROG. SCAN jacks on the back panel of the DVD Recorder to the component video inputs on your television.

    Audio/Video Receiver Connections Follow these steps to connect the DVD Recorder to a digital audio/video receiver. 1 Connect DVD Recorder to Digital Audio Receiver Connect a coaxial OR optical digital audio cable from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks on the back panel of the DVD Recorder to the matching digital audio inputs on your audio/video receiver.

    Cable Box Connections Follow these steps to connect a cable box or satellite receiver to your DVD Recorder: 1 Connect Incoming Cable to Cable Box Connect a coaxial cable from your cable TV wall outlet to the input jack on your cable box.

    Alternative Cable Box Connections This connection method allows you to record from basic cable while watching scrambled channels simultaneously. However, with this method you will not be able to record scrambled channels. 1 Connect Incoming Cable to DVD Recorder Connect the coaxial cable from your cable TV wall outlet to the ANTENNA IN jack on the back panel of the DVD Recorder.

    Digital Camcorder Connections You can connect a digital camcorder to the DVD Recorder using a single DV cable for input and output of audio, video, data and control signals. To View Digital Camcorder • Power off the DVD Recorder. • Connect the digital camcorder to the front DV Input using a standard DV cable (not included).

    Chapter 3 :: Basic Recording Recording a TV Program Follow these steps to record a television program using the built-in TV tuner. Before you begin: • Turn on the DVD Recorder using the front panel Power button. If the unit is in Standby mode, press On/Standby on the remote control to power on the unit.

    :: Editing during DVD Playback In this section you will learn how to manually insert, hide, remove and show Chapters on your DVD recordings. Once a Chapter is inserted, you can hide it, which is useful for skipping past commerials. You will also learn how to create new thumbnail images to represent the shows you’ve recorded.

    In this section you will learn how to finalize your discs for maximum compatibility with other DVD players. You will also learn how to erase individual Titles from DVD+RW discs and play full titles, which is required to restore hidden Chapters. These edits can only be done from the DVD+R/+RW disc menu.

    Making a Disc Compatible (DVD+RW only) Making a DVD+RW compatible allows it to be played in virtually any DVD player. It also prevents further writing to the disc. 1 With a recorded Title selected in the disc menu, press Edit on the remote control. 2 Use the buttons to select Make Compatible and press Play 3 FINALIZE appears briefly on-screen and the DVD+RW will be formatted for maximum compatibility and closed to further writing.

    Disc Menu Navigation Disc menus allow you to select Titles and Chapters for playback, change a disc’s default playback settings (such as Audio formats and Subtitle languages), and access any special features on the disc.     Subtitle Many DVDs contain subtitles in multiple languages. To select among all available subtitle languages: 1 Press Subtitle during DVD playback, then press Play 2 Use the buttons to select among all available subtitle languages (or Off). 3 Press Play /Enter again.

    Ratings Enables a password-protected rating system to block playback of discs with objectionable material: • Use the buttons to select Ratings and press Play • Enter a 5-digit password and press Play /Enter. NOTE: If this is the first time you have used the player, you must enter the original factory password (“99999”), before you can enter your own per- sonal password.

    Finalize DVD+R Finalizes a DVD+R disc so it will play in most DVD players. • Use the buttons to select Finalize. • Use the buttons to select Confirm (or Cancel). If you select Confirm, the DVD+R will be closed to further recording and will be compatible with most DVD players.
