the cartridge does not slide in easily, it is not being
inserted correctly.

then plug in the charger to the power receptacle. Insert
the battery cartridge so that the plus and minus terminals

CAUTION:
• Overcharging more than 24 hours shortens the battery
service life. Always unplug the charger after completing
the charge.
• Use only the Makita charger to charge this machine.
Use of other type chargers may cause the battery to
burst, resulting in personal injury and damage.
• When you charge a new battery cartridge or a battery
cartridge which has not been used for a long period, it
may not accept a full charge. This is a normal condition
and does not indicate a problem. You can recharge the
battery cartridge fully after discharging it completely a
couple of times.
Switch action (Fig. 3)
CAUTION:
• Before inserting the battery cartridge into the tool,
always check to see that the switch trigger actuates
properly and returns to the "OFF" position when
released.
To prevent the trigger from being accidentally pulled, a
lock-off button is provided.
To start the tool, push in the lock-off button and pull the
trigger. Release the trigger to stop.

tery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work
on the tool.

OPERATION

WARNING:
• Keep hands away from blades.
Turn the tool on and hold it so that the foot of the tool rest
on the ground. Then gently move the tool forward into the
area to be cut. (Fig. 6)
When trimming around curb, fence or trees, move the
tool along them. Be careful for the blade not to contact
them. (Fig. 7)
CAUTION:
• Do not let the blades contact the grounds during opera-
tion. The blades will be dulled, causing poor perfor-
mance.
• When trimming twigs and foliage, do not attempt to trim
too much at a time. Proceed gently. Also, do not
attempt to cut thick branches. (Fig. 8)

MAINTENANCE

CAUTION:
• Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the bat-
tery cartridge is removed before attempting to perform

Blade maintenance
After operation, clean off the blades (both sides) with a
stiff brush. Then wipe the blades with a cloth and coat
them with light machine oil. (Fig. 9 & 10)
If the blades become dull or slightly damaged by contact
with foreign matter, they can usually be restored to their
original performance by sharpening with a file. (Fig. 11)
CAUTION:
• Dirt and corrosion cause excessive blade friction and
shorten the operating time per battery charge.
After use
• To clean off exterior of the tool, dampen a soft cloth in
soapy water and wipe gently. Never use thinner or ben-
zine.
• Do not store the tool in a place where volatile materials
are stored.
