The optional rear flue box attachment available from ESSE has a detachable base that allows for fallen soot to be removed (See Fig.1).

With these undone, the stove top can be removed allowing access to the cast flue collar. A rear flue box attachment is also available from ESSE that allows the stove to be installed further out of any building recess. Fig.1 shows suitable flue connections.
