    1. GENERAL INFORMATION GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Model 2500L is a self-contained, broad band amplifier intended for laboratory applications where instantaneous bandwidth, high gain and high power output are required. When used with a swept frequency signal source it will provide a minimum of 2500 watts of swept CW power. Provisions are included to obtain outputs of 100 watts CW as well as 4000 watts when excited with a gate/blank input in pulse mode having a 15% duty cycle or less.

  • Page 29: Theory Of Operation

    3. THEORY OF OPERATION INTRODUCTION See Block Diagram Number 10019261. The amplifier is a broad band configuration that requires no tuning over the entire frequency band. It is a hybrid type that utilizes a solid state low level amplifier, a vacuum tube driver amplifier, and a vacuum tube final amplifier.
  • Page 30: Driver Amplifier

Model 2500L the amplifier. The output of Q4 and Q5 are coupled through matching transformer T2 to a coaxial connector, which in turn is connected to the input of the driver amplifier. Power gain of each of the cascaded stages is approximately +10dB and +13dB for the push-pull stage, giving an overall gain of better than +40 dB for the amplifier.
  • Page 31: Final Amplifier

Model 2500L Approximate voltages for the driver amplifier are shown in the following table. MODE CLASS SCREEN VOLTAGE PLATE VOLTAGE High Range Low Range FINAL AMPLIFIER See Schematic Diagram Number 10019256. The principle of operation of the final amplifier is similar to that of the driver amplifier. This includes grid and plate lines, input and output matching networks, screen supply, and bias supply.
  • Page 32 With the RF pulse within the confines of the gate pulse, the following results will be obtained. The video components are centered at approximately 1 kHz for the Model 2500L. Should the presence of these low frequency components cause difficulties in the use of the amplifier, consult the factory for suggestions for appropriate filtering methods.
  • Page 33: Power Supply

Model 2500L When the amplifier is operating in the CW mode, the RF input may be of any configuration desired; however, pulses will have their peak pulse power restricted to the CW output rating. No syncing with the gating/blanking circuit is required and any duty cycle up to CW may be used.
  • Page 34 Model 2500L 3.6.1.1 Crowbar Assembly, A1 See Schematic Diagram Number 10019266. This plug-in circuit board serves several functions. These functions are; crowbar SCR driver, operate disable timer, and blank on operate. The module utilizes a four section electronic timer (U1) that provides constant amplitude pulses of preset length from each section.

Model 2500L 3.6.1.3 Gating/Blanking Switch Circuit, A3 See Schematic Diagram Number 10019282. The blanking input at J1-8 provides gate voltage to Q1 and Q2 in CW mode. The duration of this voltage from the gating/blanking board results in no power output from the driver or final amplifiers due to screen voltages being clamped to ground by Q1 and Q2.
  • Page 36 Model 2500L The preset relief valve located inside the coolant reservoir provides a pressure of approximately 40 psig to the final amplifier resulting in a coolant flow of approximately 4 to 5 GPM. NOTE: The relief valve setting should not be changed.

The operate circuit is contained on a plug-in printed circuit board and serves to switch low power control voltages between various modules and sub-assemblies.

  • Page 46: Troubleshooting

Model 2500L A coolant filter has been built into the coolant system primarily for the purpose of trapping any foreign matter which may have been in the system at initial assembly. Under normal operating conditions it should never be necessary to change this filter. However, the filter should be changed periodically if the amplifier is operated in a dusty atmosphere such that contaminants could enter through the reservoir vent.

Model 2500L Replacement of more than several tubes would require returning the unit to the factory for realignment if optimum performance is desired. 4.4.1 Tube Replacement Procedure CAUTION: Do not disturb the coils near the tube anodes since their adjustment is critical to the amplifier alignment.
