    Remove any protective tape you see on the paper tray. Then lift off the cover and set it aside. Insert the paper tray into the printer as shown. Push it all the way in until it locks. Slide the blue paper guides apart. Then load a stack of paper (no more than 150 sheets).

    Make sure the printer and computer are turned off. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer. Then plug the other end into a grounded electrical outlet.
  • Page 9 Connect the printer to your computer. • If you’re using a USB cable, plug the square end of the cable into your printer as shown. Then plug the other end into your computer’s USB connector or a first-tier USB hub.

    Step 4 Install the Software Follow the steps below to install the software that makes CAUTION your printer work. For Windows see page 12. For Windows with a parallel connection, see page 16. Turn off all virus protection programs before you install your For Macintosh printer software.

    Safety Instructions Follow these precautions when operating your printer: Laser Safety This printer is certified as a Class 1 laser product under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Radiation Performance Standard according to the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act of 1968. This means that the printer does not produce hazardous laser radiation.

    Additional Precautions To avoid damaging your printer, follow these guidelines: • Never force the printer’s components into place. Although the printer is designed to be sturdy, rough handling can damage it. • When removing the developer cartridge, never touch the developing roller under the flap; otherwise, the print quality will decline.
  • Page 29 If the photoconductor unit is out of the printer for a long period, covering it with an opaque cloth prevents extended exposure to light and possible damage. Exposure to light will damage the drum, resulting in dark or light areas on the printed page and may shorten the service life of the unit.
