Choose the programme and use it for 15 minutes every two hours. Stimulating the
sensory nerves in the breast by a TENS machine will imitate a baby suckling (>100
times per minute), which will cause your body to produce Prolactin, the hormone
required for lactation. This stimulation should generate a mild tingling sensation.
Prolactin is released from the pituitary in about 4-5 discrete pulses over 15-20 minutes
with suckling. After this more release does not occur for a while so stimulating the
breast for more than 20 minutes does not cause Prolactin release.
Once you start getting milk in the breast, do not use TENS to replace your regular
sessions, because milk staying in the alveoli can turn the alveoli back off. You can
use TENS as a supplement stimulation with pumping later or during the night while
you sleep to accelerate the changes.
When do you need to induce lactation?
Adoption
Maternal-infant separation
Emergencies/natural disasters
Lactation can be a big struggle for some mums-to-be, especially for adoptive mothers, or
mothers who have used surrogates. Breastfeeding does not just mean feeding the baby
to fulfil its hunger and achieve the best possible growth, it always means creating a bond
between the mother and the baby. Many women desire to induce lactation for the
emotional benefits and relational closeness experienced by both mother and baby.
The process of inducing lactation is not complicated but can be slow, and it is
recommended to start stimulation about 6 weeks before welcoming the baby. You need
to actively stimulate your breasts for 10-15 minutes each at least every 3-4 hours
throughout the day. After a few days or weeks (or months) of stimulation you may begin
to see your breasts and nipples swelling. They will feel larger and feel sore and under
pressure. These are all normal indications that new acini (the milk-producing glandular
tissues) are developing inside your breasts. That is necessary before you will be able to
produce milk. Once milk appears and you are not yet nursing a child, use a hospital grade
breast pump to empty the breast after you use the TENS unit. Emptying the breasts helps
you lactate more.

Advice

The electrode pads supplied are reusable but for single patient use.
The electrode pads provided are latex-free.
To obtain the best conductivity through the electrode pads always ensure that they
are in good condition and tacky.
Replace the electrode pads when they lose their stickiness or dry out.
In very hot weather the gel on the electrode pads may become soft.

Storage life

Electrode pads should last 12 to 20 applications, depending on skin condition and
humidity.
Storage life of an unopened pack of electrode pads is 2 years. This may be affected by
very high temperatures or very low humidity.
