12 .4 .1 Routine Cleaning of the Condenser
Coils
NOTICE: Harsh chemicals, household bleach, or
acid or basic cleaners should not be used to clean the
outdoor or indoor coils of any kind. These cleaners can
be very difficult to rinse out of the coil and can accelerate
corrosion at the fin/tube interface where dissimilar
materials are in contact. Use an environmentally sound
coil cleaner as described above.
NOTICE: Do not use an outdoor coil cleaner on an
indoor coil. Use of an outdoor coil cleaner could result in
unit damage. Choose an appropriate cleaner and follow
the manufacturers instructions.
NOTICE: High velocity water from a pressure washer,
water hose, or compressed air should never be used to
clean a coil. The force of the water or air jet will bend the
fin edges and increase air side pressure drop.
Periodic cleaning with an environmentally sound coil
cleaner is essential to extend the life of the coils. Coil
cleaning should be part of the unit's regularly scheduled
maintenance procedures to ensure the long life of the
coil. Failure to clean the coils may result in reduced
performance.
Avoid the use of the following:
• Coil brighteners
• High-pressure washers
• Poor-quality water for cleaning
• Use of non-recommended coil cleaners is strongly
discouraged since the coil and unit durability could
be affected.
12 .5 Checking the Compressor
Overload
The compressor overload interrupts power to the
compressor when either the current or internal
motor winding temperature becomes excessive, and
automatically resets when the internal temperature drops
to a safe level. This overload may require 60 minutes (or
longer) to reset. If the overload is suspected of being
open, disconnect the electrical power to the unit and
check the circuit through the overload with an ohmmeter
or continuity tester.
