    Seats and Seat Controls This section tells you about the power seats adjust them, and also about reclining front seatbacks, lumbar adjustments, heated seats and head restraints. Power Seats The power seat controls are located on the outboard sides of the front seat cushions.

These buttons are used to program and recall memory settings for the driver’s seating and outside rearview mirror positions. Use the following steps to program each button: 1.

Each time a memory button is pressed, a single beep will sound. Each time button 1 or 2 is pressed and released while the vehicle is in PARK (P), the memory positions will be recalled.

    Heated Seats The front seat controls are located in the center console. The rear seat controls are located on the rear doors. Push the button once for a high setting, twice for a low setting, and a third time to turn off the heated seat. The LO setting warms the seatback and cushion until the seat approximates body temperature.
  • Page 12 But don’t have a seatback reclined if your vehicle is moving. CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job.

    Head Restraints The switches to move your head restraints are located on the outboard side of each front seat. Use this switch to move a front head restraint up or down. Lift up on the switch to move the head restraint up.

    The head restraints tilt forward and rearward also. To tilt the head restraints forward, grasp the top of the restraint and move it forward to where you want it to go until you hear a click. It will then be locked into that position until you need to move it again.

It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-18 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.

In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

  • Page 35 Your vehicle has a feature that will automatically unlock the doors and turn the interior lamps on when the air bags inflate (if battery power is available). You can lock the doors again and turn the interior lamps off by using the door lock and interior lamp controls.

  • Page 37 Rear Seat Passenger Positions Shoulder Belt All rear seating positions have lap shoulder belts. Here’s how to wear one properly. 1. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted. The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly.
  • Page 38 2. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. 3. To make the lap part tight, pull down on the buckle end of the belt as you pull up on the shoulder part. If the belt stops before it reaches the buckle, tilt the latch plate and keep pulling until you can buckle it.
  • Page 39 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen.

    Children Everyone in a vehicle needs protection! This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle.

    Restraint Systems for Children An infant car bed (A), a special bed made for use in a motor vehicle, is an infant restraint system designed to restrain or position a child on a continuous flat surface. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward the center of the vehicle.

    Safety Belt Extender If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you.

A child can be overcome by the extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke.     Power Windows The power window switches are located on the armrest near each window. Press the up or down arrows on the switches to raise or lower the windows. Your vehicle has Retained Accessory Power (RAP) that allows you to use the power windows once the ignition has been turned off.
  • Page 61 3. Press the up arrow on the power window switch until the window is fully closed. 4. Continue holding the switch up for approximately two seconds after the window is completely closed. The window is now programmed. Repeat the process for each front window.
  • Page 62 Keys CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. A child or others could be badly injured or even killed. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. If they turned the ignition to ACC or ON and moved the shift lever out of PARK (P), that would release the parking brake.

    Door Locks CAUTION: Unlocked doors can be dangerous. Passengers especially children easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle won’t open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors aren’t locked.

    Central Door Unlocking System Your vehicle has a central door unlocking mode and a theft deterrent system. When unlocking the driver’s door, you can unlock the other doors by holding the key in the turned position for a few seconds or by quickly turning the door key twice in the lock cylinder.

    Rear Door Security Locks Your vehicle is equipped with rear door security locks that prevent passengers from opening the rear doors on your vehicle from the inside. The rear door security locks are located on the inside edge of each rear door.

    Anti-Lockout Feature Leaving the key in the ignition with any door open will disable the power door lock switches as well as the lock button on the remote keyless entry transmitter. If you close the doors, you can lock them using the remote keyless entry transmitter.
  • Page 68 Changes or modifications to this system by other than an authorized service facility could void authorization to use this equipment. The average range of this system is about 10 feet (3 m). At times you may notice a decrease in range. This is normal for any remote keyless entry transmitter.

    Press this button again within one to five seconds to unlock the other doors. It will also disarm the theft deterrent system and turn on the interior lamps at night.     Battery Replacement Under normal use, the battery in your remote keyless entry transmitter should last about four years. You can tell the battery is weak if the transmitter won’t work at the normal range in any location. If you have to get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works, it’s probably time to change the battery.
  • Page 71 2. Once the transmitter is separated, use an object like a pencil to remove the old battery. Do not use a metal object. 3. Insert the new battery as the instructions under the cover indicate. 4. Snap the transmitter back together tightly to be sure no moisture can enter.

    Trunk Lock Release The trunk lock release button is located on the left side of the instrument panel below the lamp controls. Press the trunk lock release button upward to open the trunk. To use this feature, your vehicle must be in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) and the valet lockout switch must be in OFF.

    Trunk Release Handle 2-16 NOTICE: The trunk release handle was not designed to be used to tie down the trunk lid or as an anchor point when securing items in the trunk.     Theft Deterrent System The SECURITY light is located on the instrument panel cluster. If the ignition is off and any door is open, the SECURITY light will flash, reminding you to arm the system. To arm the system, do the following: 1.

    Testing the Alarm 1. From inside the vehicle, roll down the window, then get out of the vehicle, keeping the door open. 2. From outside of the vehicle, with the door open, lock the vehicle using the power door lock or the remote keyless entry system and close the door.
  • Page 77 PASS Your vehicle is equipped with the PASS (Personalized Automotive Security System) theft deterrent system. PASS Key III is a passive theft deterrent system. This means you don’t have to do anything different to arm or disarm the system. It works when you insert or remove the key from the ignition.

    New Vehicle “Break In” NOTICE: Your vehicle doesn’t need an elaborate “break in.” But it will perform better in the long run if you follow these guidelines: Don’t drive at any one speed slow for the first 500 miles (805 km). Don’t make full throttle starts.
  • Page 80 OFF: This is the only position in which you can insert or remove the key. This position also locks the transaxle. It’s a theft deterrent feature. ACC (Accessory): This position lets you use things like the radio, windshield wipers, power windows and sunroof (option) when the engine is off.

    Starting Your Engine Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). Your engine won’t start in any other position a safety feature. To restart when you’re already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. NOTICE: Don’t try to shift to PARK (P) if your vehicle is moving.
  • Page 82 3. If your engine still won’t start (or starts but then stops), it could be flooded with too much gasoline. Try pushing your accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and holding it there as you hold the key in START for about three seconds.

    In very cold weather, 0 _ F ( 18 _ C) or colder, the engine coolant heater can help. You’ll get easier starting and better fuel economy during engine warm up. Usually, the coolant heater should be plugged in a minimum of four hours prior to starting your vehicle.

    Automatic Transaxle Operation There are several different positions for the shift lever. PARK (P): This position locks the front wheels. It’s the best position to use when you start the engine because your vehicle can’t move easily. CAUTION: It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set.
  • Page 85 REVERSE (R): Use this gear to back up. NOTICE: Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving forward could damage your transaxle. Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle has stopped. Also use this gear to rock your vehicle back and forth to get out of snow, ice or sand without damaging your transaxle.
  • Page 86 AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE ( ): This position is for normal driving. If you need more power for passing, and you’re: Going less than 35 mph (55 km/h), push the accelerator pedal about halfway down. Going about 35 mph (55 km/h) or more, push the accelerator all the way down.
  • Page 87 FIRST (1): This position gives you even more power than SECOND (2). You can use it on very steep hills, or in deep snow or mud. If the traction control switch is off, your vehicle will not go into FIRST (1) gear and the vehicle will accelerate from stop more slowly.
  • Page 88 Parking Brake The parking brake pedal is located to the left of the regular brake pedal, near the driver’s door. To set the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot and push the parking brake pedal down with your left foot.

Pull down on the yellow tab as shown by the arrow in the illustration. If the parking brake does not release, you should have your vehicle towed to your dealer for service.

Your vehicle could move suddenly if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set. And, if you leave the vehicle with the engine running, it could overheat and even catch fire.

    Shifting Out of PARK (P) Your vehicle has an automatic transaxle shift lock control system. You have to fully apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition is ON. See “Automatic Transaxle” in the Index. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease the pressure on the shift lever.

    Engine Exhaust CAUTION: Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas carbon monoxide (CO), which you can’t see or smell. It can cause unconsciousness and death. You might have exhaust coming in if: Your exhaust system sounds strange or different. Your vehicle gets rusty underneath.

  • Page 95 Power Tilt and Telescopic Wheel (If Equipped) The power tilt wheel control is located on the outboard side of the steering column. To operate the power tilt feature, push the control up and the steering wheel will tilt up. Push the control down and the steering wheel will go down.

Turn and Lane-Change Signals To signal a turn, move the lever on the left side of the steering wheel all the way up or down.

    Headlamp High/Low-Beam Changer When the low beam headlamps are on, push the turn signal lever away from you to change the headlamps to high beam. This light on the instrument panel cluster will be on, indicating high beam usage. Pull the turn signal lever toward you to return to beam headlamps.

    If the battery continues to discharge, even with the engine idling at a higher rpm setting, some electrical loads will automatically be reduced.     Comfort Controls This section tells you how to make your air system work for you. Climate Control Panel Your vehicle is equipped with a dual climate control system. This system can automatically adjust and control temperature, fan speed, air delivery mode, air conditioning operation and air intake.
  • Page 175 Press the driver’s side TEMP knob to turn the system on and off. The passenger’s side TEMP knob only turns off the system for the passenger’s side and the rear seat area. The passenger’s side TEMP knob controls both the temperature for the right front passenger and the rear seat area.

This is helpful when you are trying to cool the air quickly or limit odors entering your vehicle. Press this button again to turn off the recirculation feature.
