Setting Up Inverter Modes

The latest guidelines by MNRE, India suggests that it should be possible to operate the grid tied solar
inverter with a variety of modes in order to provide grid support. These modes have been detailed
in "Technical requirements for Photovoltaic Grid Tie Inverters to be connected to the Utility Grid in
India" by "Standards & Quality Control Division of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, GoI"
issued April 21' 2020. According to the standard, the solar inverter should be able to work in four
operating modes, namely unity power factor mode (default mode for inverter); fixed power factor
mode; reactive power control mode; and active power control mode. Further in this document these
modes will be referred to by their abbreviations i.e. UPF for unity power factor mode; FPF for fixed
power factor mode; RPC for reactive power control mode; and APC for active power control mode.
The current operating mode gets displayed in the default loop on the LCD screen as "Inv. :UPF" as
shown in Figure 2 on page 34. Depending upon the type of grid support required, the user can set
the operating mode of the solar inverter using the user interface of the inverter i.e. the keypad and
LCD display by following the flow chart given in Figure 3 on page 35. The procedure is explained in
detail next:
While the inverter is in its default loop (Figure 2 on page 34), long press the Back button till the
inverter comes out of the default loop. Now keep the Back button pressed, till "Restricted Access?"
is displayed on the screen. Now press Enter, user will be prompted to enter the password to get
access to the restricted menu. User should enter the correct password using Up/Down/Enter keys. If
correct password is entered user will be allowed access to the restricted menu and "Access Granted"
will be displayed on screen, otherwise "Wrong Password" will be displayed on the screen and user will
be asked to re-enter the password. Three seconds after "Access Granted" is displayed, "Clear Fault
FIFO?" will be displayed on the screen. Now using Up/Down keys, reach a point where screen displays
"Inverter Modes?" on the screen and press Enter. "Unity Power Factor Mode?" will be displayed on
the screen, press Enter and UPF mode will be set and "Unity Power Mode Set" will be displayed on
screen and the inverter enters the default loop (Figure 2 on page 34).
To set FPF mode, press Up/down keys when "Unity Power Factor Mode?" is displayed on the screen
