GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The StarMax S102, 5.6 K-Factor, Institutional Horizontal
Sidewall Sprinklers are quick response - standard cover-
age, spray sprinklers designed for use in light or ordinary
hazard occupancy, correctional, detention, and mental
health care facilities. The quick response rating of the
StarMax S102 enables its use in compliance with the new-
est NFPA standards requiring the use of quick response
sprinklers for all light hazard occupancies.
The unique features of the StarMax S102 provide a tam-
per resistant sprinkler design that helps eliminate the op-
portunity for individuals to injure themselves or others
with a fire sprinkler. At the same time, the StarMax S102
optimizes on an aesthetically appealing flush design that
conceals most of the operating parts, and provides added
protection for the heat sensitive glass bulb element.
The StarMax S102 Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are de-
signed for installation along a wall or the side of a beam
and just beneath a smooth ceiling. They are commonly
used instead of pendent sprinklers because of building
construction considerations where piping above the ceil-
ing is not desirable.
WARNINGS
The StarMax S102 Sprinklers described herein must be
installed and maintained in compliance with this docu-
ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the Na-
tional Fire Protection Association, in addition to the stand-
ards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to
do so may impair the integrity of these devices.
The owner is responsible for maintaining their fire protec-
tion system and devices in proper operating condition.
The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should
be contacted relative to any questions.
OPERATION
In the standby condition, the design of the StarMax is
such that a suspended load of 75 lbs. (34 kg) or more ap-
plied to the linkage mechanism will release the sprinkler.
Also, when properly installed, the escutcheon is held fast
to the wall, to deter removal of the escutcheon. The
shape of the escutcheon cannot easily be grasped, which
further deters tampering.
A glass bulb operating element is protected within the link-
age mechanism of the StarMax. The bulb contains a fluid
which expands when exposed to heat. When the rated
temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to
shatter the glass bulb. Shattering of the glass bulb re-

leases the linkage mechanism holding the sprinkler
closed, which then allows the sprinkler to activate by al-
lowing the deflector to extend outward, and water to flow.

Physical Characteristics
The StarMax S102 utilizes a brass body and bronze me-
chanical linkage with an enclosed 2.5 mm diameter glass
bulb; a silicone orifice seal; and, a deflector assembly of
bronze and copper. The escutcheon is decorative plated
1/32 inch (0,8 mm) thick sheet metal.
Patents
U.S.A. Patent No. 6,123,153 applies to the StarMax S102
Institutional Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers.
DESIGN CRITERIA
The 5.6 K-Factor, StarMax S102 (SIN S3046) Institutional
Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are intended for use in fire
protection systems designed in accordance with the
standard installation rules recognized by the applicable
Listing or Approval agency (e.g., UL Listing is based on
NFPA 13 requirements). The S102 must be installed with
a deflector to ceiling distance of 4 to 12 inches (100 to
