Applying or releasing manually
To engage: push handle :.
X
When the electric parking brake is engaged,
the F (USA only) or ! (Canada only)
red indicator lamp lights up in the instrument
cluster.
i
The electric parking brake can also be
applied when the SmartKey is removed.
To release: pull handle :.
X
The red F (USA only) or ! (Canada
only) indicator lamp in the instrument cluster
goes out.

The electric parking brake can only be
released:
when the SmartKey is in position 1 in the
R
ignition lock (
page 140) or
Y
if the ignition was switched on using the
R
Start/Stop button
To ensure that you do not roll backwards when
pulling away on an uphill slope, engage the elec-
tric parking brake (
page 143).
Y
Applying automatically
The electric parking brake is automatically
applied when the transmission is in position j
and
the engine is switched off or
R
the driver is not wearing a seat belt and the
R
driver's door is opened
To prevent the electric parking brake from being
automatically applied, pull handle :.
The electric parking brake is also engaged auto-
matically if:
Distance Pilot DISTRONIC brings the vehicle
R
to a standstill or
the HOLD function is keeping the vehicle sta-
R
tionary
Parking Pilot is keeping the vehicle stationary
R
In addition, at least one of the following condi-
tions must be fulfilled:
the engine is switched off
R
the driver is not wearing a seat belt and the
R
driver's door is opened
there is a system malfunction
R
the power supply is insufficient
R
the vehicle is stationary for a lengthy period
R
The red F (USA only) or ! (Canada only)
indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights
up.
The electric parking brake is not automatically
engaged if the engine is switched off by the ECO
start/stop function.
Releasing automatically
The electric parking brake is released automat-
ically when all of the following conditions are
fulfilled:
The engine is running.
R
The seat belt tongue is engaged in the belt
R
buckle.
The transmission is in position h or k and
R
you depress the accelerator pedal or, on a
level surface, shift from transmission position
j to h or k.
If the transmission is in position k, the trunk
R
lid must be closed.
If the seat belt tongue is not engaged in the seat
belt buckle, the following conditions must be
fulfilled:
The driver's door is closed.
R
You are shifting from transmission position
R
j or have previously driven at speeds
greater than 2 mph (3 km/h).
If the transmission is in position k, the trunk
R
lid must be closed.
When the electric parking brake is released,
the ! indicator lamp goes out in the instru-
ment cluster.
