Preparing for Maintenance

1. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug
(Figure 22) before performing any maintenance
procedure.

3. After performing the maintenance procedure(s),
connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
Important: Before tipping the mower to change
the oil or replace the blade, allow the fuel tank
to run dry through normal usage. If you must
tip the mower prior to running out of fuel, use a
hand fuel pump to remove the fuel. Always tip
the mower onto its side with the air filter up.
Tipping the mower may cause the fuel to leak.
Gasoline is flammable, explosive and can cause
personal injury.
Run the engine dry or remove the gasoline with
a hand pump; never siphon.

Cleaning under the Housing

Keep the underside of the housing clean. Be especially
careful to keep the kickers free of debris (Figure 23).

Washing Method
1. With the engine off, move the lawn mower onto a
flat surface near a garden hose.
2. Attach a quick disconnect coupling (sold separately)
to the end of the garden hose.
3. Lift the rear door and attach the coupling to the
lawn mower washout fitting on the recycling plug
(Figure 24).

4. Turn the water on high.
5. Start the engine.
6. Let the lawn mower run for 2 minutes.
7. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
8. Turn the water off.
9. Remove the coupling from the washout fitting.
10. Start the lawn mower and let it run for 1 minute to
dry out the lawn mower and its components.
If the underside of the housing has excessive grass
buildup, repeat steps 2 through 8 above and do the
following:
1. Let the lawn mower soak for 30 minutes.
2. Turn the water on high again.
3. Run the lawn mower for another 2 minutes.
4. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
