Maintenance Fundamentals

pre-ride Inspection
To ensure safety, it is your responsibility to perform a
pre-ride inspection and make sure that any problem
you find is corrected. A pre-ride inspection is a must,
not only for safety, but because having a breakdown,
or even a flat tyre, can be a major inconvenience.
Check the following items before you ride motorcycle:
Fuel level − Fill fuel tank when necessary (page 21).
Q
Throttle − Check for smooth opening and full
Q
closing in all steering positions (page 52).
Engine oil level − Add engine oil if necessary.
Q
Check for leaks (page 42).
Drive chain − Check condition and slack, adjust
Q
and lubricate if necessary (page 47).
Brakes − Check operation;
Q
Front and Rear: check brake fluid level and pads
wear (page 44).
Lights and horn − Check that lights, indicators
Q
and horn function properly.
Engine stop switch − Check for proper function
Q
(page 18).
Clutch − Check operation; adjust freeplay if
Q
necessary (page 50).
Wheels and tyres − Check condition, air pressure
Q
and adjust if necessary (page 33).
Before riding off-road check all of the preceding plus
the following:
Make sure spokes are tight. Check the rims for any

damage (page 49).
Be sure the fuel fill cap is securely fastened (page
Q
22).
Check for loose cables and other parts, and
Q
anything that appears abnormal.
Use a wrench to check the tightness of all
Q
accessible nuts, bolts and fasteners.
Replacing parts
Always use Honda Genuine
Parts or their equivalents to
ensure reliability and safety.
When ordering coloured
components, specify the
model name, colour, and
code mentioned on the
colour label. The colour
label is attached to the frame
under the seat (page 38).
