Removing Telephone Tone Checking
IMPORTANT
All W8710A Systems are factory-programmed to
detect when a customer's extension telephone is in
use before trying to dial out. When in use, the
W8710A checks every two minutes for a free line.
This prevents the W8710A from interrupting a cus-
tomer's telephone call.
NOTE: The W8710A detects telephone use by sensing low
telephone line voltage that occurs when an extension
telephone is in use. This feature is called tone check-
ing.
Occasionally, the tone checking capability must be removed
because:
• Some customers subscribe to low voltage telephone
service from their telephone company.
• Using wireless telephone jacks causes low telephone line
voltage
• Both of the above conditions can cause the W8710A to
incorrectly sense extension line usage and prevent alert
reports from being transmitted.
To remove the tone checking capability:
1. Press the 9 key.
2. Press the 2 key to go to the tone checking menu.

Circuit Board LED Red Indicator Light
The red LED has four states, blinking, dim, illuminated, and
not illuminated:
BLINKING
• Blinks once: When the Clear button is pressed and held for
seven or more seconds, the LED blinks once, then lights
for approximately five seconds, and then goes out while
the modem transmits a manually-initiated alert report.
• Blinks five times: When the W8710A performs a self-test
while powering up. After blinking five times, it should light
steadily.
• Blinks continuously:
— When the W8710A is unable to transmit a report because
an outside phone line (not the customer's phone line) is
busy or
— When the W8710A is in a fault condition.
DIM
• LED lights but not brightly:
— And the Handheld Programmer screen displays power is
off, the W8710A is running from the rechargeable battery
(check for 24V to the W8710A).
— Check for a short in the cables or incorrect unit wiring.
ILLUMINATED
• LED light is bright and constant:
— Indicates W8710A is operating correctly and not in a fault
condition.
NOT ILLUMINATED
• LED does not light and is totally out:
— Check for a short in the cables or incorrect unit wiring.
— Check for lack of 24V power from the transformer.
— Check for the microprocessor chip (large chip labeled ESM
10 Ver X.XX) installed backward.
— Check for faulty circuit board. Please contact Honeywell.
