    To ensure safe operation For your safety and the safety of others, pay special attention to these precautions: Honda tiller is designed to give safe and dependable service if operated according to instructions. Read and understand the Owner’s Manual before operat- ing the tiller.
  • Page 7 Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where the tiller is refueled or where gasoline is stored. Do not overfill the fuel tank, and make sure the fuel tank cap is closed securely after refueling.
  • Page 8 − To ensure safe operation Operator responsibility Read the owner’s manual carefully. Be familiar with the controls and their proper use of the tiller. Use the tiller for the purpose it is intended that is, cultivating the soil. Any other use could be dangerous or damage the equipment, especially never use it to cultivate soil containing rocks, stones, wires and any other hard materials.

If the fuel valve is equipped on the tiller, be sure to turn the fuel valve OFF.

Keep gasoline out of reach of children. Add fuel before starting the engine. Never remove the cap of the fuel tank or add gasoline while the engine is running or when the engine is hot.

Breathing exhaust can cause loss of consciousness and may lead to death.     PRE-OPERATION CHECK Engine oil Running the engine with insufficient oil can cause serious engine damage. Place the tiller on a level surface. Remove the oil filler cap and wipe the dipstick clean. Insert the dipstick into the oil filler neck, but do not screw it in. If the level is low, fill to the top of the oil filler neck with the recom- mended oil.

    Fuel Use gasoline (Unleaded or lowleaded is preferred to minimize combustion chamber deposits). Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or an oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting dirt or water in the fuel tank. Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions.
  • Page 19 (see page Gasolines containing alcohol If you decide to use a gasoline containing alcohol (gasohol), be sure its octane rating is at least as high as that recommended by Honda (see Gasoline recommendation on page ). There are two types of ‘‘gasohol’’: one containing ethanol, and the other containing methanol.

    Tools and Attachments To install a tool or attachment on the tiller, follow the instructions furnished with the tool or attachment. Ask your Honda dealer for advice if you encouter any problem or difficulty in installing a tool or attachment.

    STARTING THE ENGINE Be sure the clutch is disengaged and the shift lever is in the neutral position to prevent sudden uncontrolled movement when the engine starts. The clutch is engaged by pulling in the clutch lever and disengaged by releasing the lever.

  • Page 23 Hold the handle with your left hand and pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance, then pull briskly in the direction of the arrow as shown below. Do not allow the starter grip to snap back against the engine. Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter.
  • Page 24 High altitude performance can be improved by specific modifications to the carburetor. If you always operate the tiller at altitudes higher than 1,500 m (5,000 feet) above sea level, have an authorized Honda tiller dealer perform this carburetor modification. Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower will decrease about 3.5% for each 300 meters (1,000 foot) increase in altitude.

    TILLER OPERATION Handle angle adjustment The handle can be adjusted at two different angles in either direction. To adjust, loosen the handle angle adjuster and turn the handle column to the required position. After adjustment, tighten the adjuster securely. The handle angle lever cannot be tightend unless the handle columns are set at the specified angle.

    Main clutch operation The clutch engages and disengages the power from the engine to the transmission. When the clutch lever is squeezed, the clutch is engaged and power is transmitted. Squeeze the lever. The tool will be rotated. When the lever is released, the clutch is disengaged and power is not transmitted.

    Side clutch operation The side clutches are used for turning the tiller to the right or to the left. Turn the tiller to the RIGHT; Grasp the RIGHT side clutch. Turn the tiller to the LEFT; Grasp the LEFT side clutch. Reduce engine rpm before operating the side clutches.

    Gear shift operation The transmission is of a three forward speeds and one reverse speed transmission (six forward speeds and two reverse speeds by multipling the two speeds of the sub transmission).     P.T.O. (Power Take Off) operation The P.T.O. shaft is used for stationary work, hulling, spraying and moving, etc. When using the P.T.O. shaft, consult your servicing dealer. Do not operate the tiller without the P.T.O. cover when the P.T.O. is not used.

    Lighting switch operation (GE Type only) The switch changes the headlight and trailer working light. Push upper: Working light comes ON and headlight goes OFF. Push lower: Headlight comes ON and working light goes OFF. Tilling depth adjustment Install the hitch attachment in the hitch box with a hitch pin. The tilling depth adjustment can be made by loosening the bolts securing the drag bars A and B and sliding the drag bars up or down as necessary.

    Air cleaner service A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor. To prevent carburetor malfunction, service the air cleaner regularly. Service more frequently when operating the engine in extremely dusty areas. Never use gasoline or low flash point solvents for cleaning the air cleaner element.

    Fuel strainer cup cleaning Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position and remove the fuel strainer cup and the O-ring. Wash the fuel strainer cup in solvent, dry it thoroughly and reinstall the fuel strainer cup and O-ring securely.

    Spark plug service Recommended spark plug: BPR5ES (NGK) W16EPR-U (DENSO) To ensure proper engine operation, the spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits. Remove the spark plug cap and use a spark wrench to remove the plug. If the engine has been running, the muffler will be very hot.

After the spark plug is seated, tighten with a spark plug wrench to compress the washer. After seating it by hand, tighten a new spark plug 1/2 turn with the wrench to compress the washer.

    Working light bulb replacement (GE type only) Pull off the maintenance lid. Remove the lower cover by removing four 5 mm screws. Remove the four 6 mm bolts and the engine hood. Pull off the rubber boot, then remove the bulb by pushing and turning it counterclockwise.

    TRANSPORTING/STORAGE When transporting the tiller, turn the fuel valve OFF and keep the tiller level to prevent fuel spillage. Fuel vapor or spilled fuel may ignite. Before storing the unit for an extended period: Be sure the storage area is free of excessive humidity and dust. Drain the fuel: Gasoline is flammable and explosive under certain conditions.

    Is the spark plug in good condition? Remove and inspect the spark plug. Clean, readjust gap and dry the spark plug. Replace it if necessary. If the engine still does not start, take the tiller to an authorized Honda dealer.
