1. About this manual This service manual contains information for maintenance and service of DV M21; high definition camcorder. The manual might guide & help you to do the system diagnostics, Firm/Ware update and the product troubleshooting. 2. Safety precaution 2.1 This product contains High Voltage circuit might hurts service people whom without electronic knowledge or inadequate training. 2.2 Warning to a Cardiac, for your healthy & avoid dangerous high voltage electric shock, we strongly suggest you do not try to opening & servicing this product. 2.3 Be sure to discharge the High Voltage storage energy prior to disassembly the enclosure. i.e. remove entirely power sources (Li‐ion battery, AA battery & USB port) & wait 30 minutes for circuitry self discharge. 3. The firmware update procedure 3.1 Install the update tool, (“DU, Direct USB”) in your computer. 3.2. Launch “DU” utility, then the dialogue box will appear as below. ...

3.3. Connect the USB cable between PC & Camcorder. 3.4. Configure the product; select your main board configuration & DRAM speed that meets your camcorder specification. 3.5. There are two source paths; one is for entirely erasing the flash memory, and another one is for quick update purpose respectively. 3.6. The “Boot Loader” path is for entirely erasing the flash memory when fatal design changes. 3.7. Using the “Boot Loader” pull down menu to browse the location of special erasing/replacement firmware provided by the DSP supplier; named “amboot_kernel_fomfs_dsp_release.elf.bin”. ...

3.8. Using the “Firmware programming” pull down menu to browse the location of new firmware to be updated, e.g. C:\Documents and setting\My file\ Programming codes\ amboot_xx_xxx_dsp_releasexx.elf 3.9. For quick update; select “Firmware programming” option check & press “Connect button” to connect camcorder and then press “Download” button to update new firmware. 3.10. For fatal design change will erase the old firmware resident in the camcorder first, otherwise the camcorder might work improperly. ...

3.11. Select “Boot Loader” option check & press “Connect button” to connect camcorder and then press “Download” button to entirely erasing the flash memory. 3.12. And then execution step 3.9 quick update Firmware, then your camcorder has been complete updated. ...
4. Disassembly Procedure 4.1. Tool used: A tweezers, a screw wrench, a magnetic, an anti ESD sponge, an ESD discharging wrist strip and a solder iron. 4.2. Be sure to fully discharge the High voltage energy prior to disassemble the unit, refer to Safety precaution section 2.2 ~2.4. 4.3. Sticking a small magnet on the wrench tip as photo shown below for easy handling these tiny screws. ...

4.8. Partially open the rear end of the LCD module very carefully, otherwise the flat cables, FPCB, connect between LCM & main board will be destroyed. Note: That’s a little tough to disassemble the LCD module; coursed of 4 ribs/hooks clamp inner. Please be patient and take your time. ...

The Trouble shooting guide 5.1 Power failure 5.1.1 Power cold start failure with USB Power source Check board to board interconnectors, PCONI & MCON2, is it improperly joins? Check solder join of the USB connector, is it poor workmanship, cracking open or somehow? Check PF1 & PD4 with a multi‐meter, is it work? Test PU2; PIN5 is it3.3V output? Test PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5, PR40 are they 1.8V, 1.2V, 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V output respectively? Is it F/W data lose failure? If yes; do F/W update once. 5.1.2 Power cold start failure with AA battery power source Check the battery’s contact spring, is it deform? Check board to board interconnectors, PCONI & MCON2, is it improperly joins? Test PU6; PIN5 is it 4.5V output? Check PF1 with a multi‐meter, is it work? Test PU2; is it 5V output? Is it F/W data lose failure? If yes; do F/W update once. Check solder join of the DSP, is it poor workmanship, cracking open, intermittent? Or DSP fail. ...

5.1.3 Power cold start failure with Li‐ion battery power source Check board to board interconnectors, PCONI & MCON2, is it improperly joins? Check the battery’s contact spring, is it deform? Check PT26, PT27 & PC17, is it poor workmanship caused circuit short? Test PU6; PIN5 is it 4.5V output? Check PF1 & PFB1 with a multi‐meter, are those good? Test PU1 pin6 & pin7 with an oscilloscope, is VBATT signal normal? Test PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5, PR40 are they 1.8V, 1.2V, 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V output respectively? Is it F/W data lose failure? If yes; do F/W update once. Check solder join of the DSP, is it poor workmanship, cracking open, intermittent? Or DSP fail. 5.2 LED failure Checks LED2, LJ1, MJ3 & BJ1 are those parts short, open or intermittent? Test PQ8 pin5 with an oscilloscope, is VBATT signal normal? Check board to board interconnectors, is it improperly joins or intermittent? Check PR34‐512M, PR38 ‐100K are they normal? Check PL6, switch, is it normal? ...

5.3 Sound failure Check Speaker wires, cold solder, broken or not? Check Speaker impedance, is correct? Test MU1 & MR7, is it around 3.3 V? Test Speaker, is it around 1.9 V rms? Check board to board interconnectors, PCONI & MCON2, is it improperly joins? Check MJ4 & HR1; is it poor workmanship caused circuit open or short? Test MCON2 pin16 & pin17 with an oscilloscope, are clock & data waveform signal normal? Check solder join of the DSP, is it poor workmanship, cracking open, intermittent? Or DSP fail. 5.4 Firmware Programming failure Test MX1, Mx2 & Mx3 with an oscilloscope, are those clock waveform signal normal? Test MQ7, MQ8, MQ5, MD2, MD3 & MD5 with an oscilloscope, are those k waveform signal normal? Test PR10 & PR14; are they 5V & 3.3V respectively? Replace the Flash memory, if fail at programming progress. Check PL9; is it cold solder or open? Try to replace DDR memory, if no fixed by above Flash replacement. Replace DSP eventually if no memories problems. ...

5.5 PC connection failure Check Flash IC, is it cold solder join? Replace Flash IC 5.6 SD Card failure Data write protected/disabled. Is SD card deforming? Is SD card /golden finger corrosion? Replace a new SD card. Check SD connector, is it cold solder? Check SD connector, inner contact pins, is they deform? Check SD connector, inner contact pins, is they corrosion caused high contact resistance? SD not detected, or system hangs by plug SD card. Is SD card deforming? Is SD card /golden finger corrosion? Check MR16, MR116, MR18, MR9 & MR14, is they cold soldering, wrong parts, or resistance were abnormally changing? Replace DSP eventually. 5.7 AV output failure Dark screen or asynchronous Check AV cable is proper connected between TV & Camcorder? Check PJ4, is deforming, cold soldering open or short or poor contact? ...

Check solder join of the DSP, is it poor workmanship caused intermittent open or somehow? 5.8 LCD module display failure Dark or white or greenish screen or asynchronous picture Is LCD FPCB flat cable crack? Is LCD FPCB flat cable improperly joins? Is Golden finger/FPCB dirty? Is Speaker wires short, affect to LCD display? Check MJ2 & FPCB, is it cold soldering crack? Check LCD setup parameter. Replace LCD module. Blemish, Dad Pixel, White Pixel & Hot Pixel Is it within product specification? don’t care about it. Is some dirty particle attached LCD or CMOS sensor or Lens? If the blemish caused by the CMOS sensor; Do Dad Pixel & White Pixel calibration again. Note: 1. The CMOS sensor; typically contains around 100 ~ 300 hot pixel & fixed pattern noise or call blemish. 2. In the production process using the Dad Pixel & White Pixel calibration to compensated & optimizes the picture quality. Unfortunately, when F/W updates this calibration factor might lose & shall be calibrated again. ...
If the blemish caused by the LCD module & out of product specification, replace with new one. 5.9 Charging failure Check MSW3 & PU3, is it open or short? 5.10 Diagnostic test failure Update Firmware once. Check solder join of the DSP, is it poor workmanship, cracking open, intermittent? Or DSP fail, replace it. 5.11 High current failure Check MC30 & MX1, is it short or damage? 5.12 HDMI failure Check PJ4 & HDMI connector; is it cold soldering or deforming or poor contact? Check solder join of the DSP, is it poor workmanship caused intermittent open or somehow? 6.
