General care and maintenance

Regular maintenance will give your chainsaw a long, effective
life.
The more you use your chainsaw, the more often you should
m aintain it.
Frequently
Oil the chain. Use plenty ol oil when cutting
new bar or chain.
Every few hours
1. Remove the chain and guide bar
2. Clean the chain and guide bar thoroughly Pay particular
attention to the oil hole and groove in the bar, and the oil nole
in the bar mount on the machine
3 Check the guide bar for wear Remove light burrs with a flat file;
heavy burrs mean 'replace' - see next column
4 Oil the sprocket spindie with a few drops of chain oil, and
check that the sprocket isn't badly worn If it is, see return'.
5 Re-assemble the guide bar and chain, fitting the bar the
other w ay round.
This w ill distribute the wear evenly around the guide bar rails.

7. With a sprocket-nosed bar, oil the spindle every two hours ot -

Saw Chain Sharpening
Sharpen the chain at regular intervals to get the best out of it
You w ill need a Black & Decker saw chain sharpening kit (see
'Accessories']
On each tooth, this is the cutter
and this is the depth-gauge, lim iting the depth ot cut to this
1 File from the inside to the outside of the cutters only

Put the file-holder with its tile on a cutter, keeping thisjine
parallel with the chain ^

3. Hold the file level, press against the cutter, and make 2 or 3
light strokes forward. Don't be heavy-handed.

Replace
The chain when it has been re-sharpened many limes, or
it the links become worn or stiff due to lack of maintenance
Make sure that the replacement is a
safety chain, and remember to soak it in chain oil for an hour
before fitting it See Accessories' for suitable chains
The guide bar with every second new chain, and at any
time it there is
-- spreading of the rails giving a very wide groove.
- uneven rail wear,
- heavily worn rails giving a shallow groove;
. - cracking of the bar surface This is due to overheating
caused by lack of oil
Return
your saw to Black & Decker tor replacement pads to be fitted
if - the sprocket is badly worn,
or - the cable is in poor condition
You should not dismantle
the machine other than as described in this leaflet
4 Sharpen all the cutters on one side, then move to the other side
of the saw and file the rest
D epth gauges
Check depth gauges every third sharpening You will need a
medium-grade flat file as welt as the filing gauge in the '
sharpening kit
1.
Put the filing gauge on the chain over each depth gauge in turn
2.
If a depth-gauge protects, file it level
3.
Finally, round oft the corners of the depth-gauges
