Intrepid II Wood Stove

Fuel

Burn 16" firewood that has been split, stacked, and air-dried for about one year.

Controls

Two controls are used to operate the stove. The damper handle, located on the right side of the stove, controls
the position of the internal stove damper. When the damper handle is pointed down, the internal stove damper
is in the open position. Hot smoke and gases rising from the fire flow directly to the flue collar of the stove
and to the chimney. When the damper handle is pointed to the front, the internal damper is in the closed
position. Hot smoke and gases rising from the fire are directed through the exit slot in the fireback and
through the catalytic combustion system before passing through the flue collar of the stove and to the
chimney. The thermostat lever, located on the top right rear of the stove, allows manual control of the primary
air supply. As you move the lever toward the left, the air shutter opens and admits more air. This will increase
the rate of combustion and the heat output.

Starting the Stove

1. Set the Controls

Turn the damper handle so it points down. This opens the internal stove damper.
Move the thermostat lever toward the left to admit maximum air.

2. Kindle a Fire

Build a paper and kindling fire. When the kindling wood is burning well, start adding split dry pieces of wood
about 3" in diameter. Build the fire gradually until you have established a bed of hot coals 3" to 4" thick on
the grate. Avoid the extremes of a roaring blaze or a slow smoky fire. Building the bed of coals on the grate
may take an hour or more.
A strong kindling fire preheats the stove and chimney system.

3. Griddle Temperature

high heat output. 450
is necessary to begin catalytic combustion -- close the damper.

4. Load the Stove

Add more wood according to familiarity with the stove and heating requirements. A very full load will enable
you to increase the heat output and length of burn.

5. Close the Damper

When the griddle temperature reaches 450
, close the damper. Leave the thermostat lever open for

Reloading the Stove Reload the stove while the system is still hot and there is plenty of charcoal to re-kindle the fire quickly. Including some smaller pieces of wood in the new load will help the stove regain high temperatures quickly.
