Pocket Moisture Meter BT-400
Item no. 1209830
Intended use
The device is used for comparatively measuring the moisture level of wood-based materials
and mineral construction materials. Therefore the moisture level can be comparatively con-
trolled over a particular time span. The measurement is carried out via wo insertion sensors,
which are secured onto the material to be measured or are stuck into the material. The insertion
sensors can be changed with wear and tear. In addition to moisture the battery operated device
also selectively displays the ambient temperature in the display A battery change display is
available. A protective cap is also attached for transport protection.
Please note all additional safety instructions in this manual since incorrect handling can result
in injury. The protective cap must always be attached during non-use.
Safety and hazard information
An exclamation mark indicates important information in the operating instruc-
tions. Please read the operating instructions thoroughly before use, they
contain important information on correct operation.
In case of damage caused by non-observance of these operating instructions, the
warranty gets void! We are not liable for any consequential damage!
We are not liable for property damage or injuries caused by improper use or non-
observance of safety instructions! Such circumstances will void the warranty!
• The unauthorized conversion and/or changing of the product is not permitted for
safety reasons.
• Please ensure correct starting up of the unit . Please follow the operating instructions.
• The device should not be exposed to extreme temperatures, strong vibrations or a
high level of humidity. A display only functions at a temperature range of 0 to +50°C.
• The housing should not be dismantled until the protective cap and the battery
compartment cover are opened.
• This product is not a toy and must be kept out of reach of children.

Inserting/changing batteries
New batteries must be inserted
symbol appears above right in the display.
Four type LR44 button cells or identically constructed cells are needed for operation. Replace-
ment batteries are attached in the measuring unit.
during initial operation or when the the battery change
Proceed as follows to insert/replace batteries:
• Place the protective cap (1) onto the device to avoid injuries.
• Open the battery compartment. Attach the battery compartment cover (9) onto the side and
pull this down from the housing.
• If necessary remove the batteries used from the battery compartment (8). At the same time
gently tap the device into an open hand. The batteries are released from the compartment.
Version 08/14
Insert new batteries of the same type into the battery compartment according to their polarity.
°
Please note the battery symbol in the battery compartment or the polarity information in the
sketch "individual parts description".
• Carefully close the battery compartment again.
The protective cap and the battery compartment cover only fit onto the correct side of the
device. Please note the correct position.
Suitable replacement batteries can be obtained under order no. 652041. Please order 2nd
set twice.
Remove the batteries from the device when not in use for a prolonged period to prevent leak-
ing batteries damaging the device. For the same reason remove empty batteries immediately.
Do not carelessly leave batteries lying around. Children or pets may swallow
batteries left lying about. If a battery has been swallowed, seek medical advice
immediately.
Do not recharge, short circuit batteries. Do not throw into fire. There is a risk
of explosion!
Startup and operation
Please read these operating instructions completely and thoroughly before
use to ensure correct startup ! The measuring device is not suitable for quan-
titative measurement e.g. for quality assurance.
The device measures the conductivity of the test material via two insertion sensors. The con-
ductivity increases with the moisture level of the material. Different materials also have different
specifications. The BT-400 respectively determines an average value for organic and mineral
materials via different material types.
Dirt and dampness between the insertion sensors can distort the measuring result. Always pay
attention to dry and clean insertion sensors.
Wood building materials such as sawn timber, cardboard or paper have another moisture level
to mineral building materials such as mortar, bricks or stone etc. Therefore two areas are avail-
able for evaluation. Both areas are indicated by symbols.
Mineral measured value for building material
Organic measured value for wood, cardboard or paper
Select switch on and measuring function
To switch on keep the button pressed for approximately 2 seconds
After switching on the display shows the last measuring functions set and the last function of
the display light selected (On/Off).
Briefly hold down the "MODE" (5) button in the activated state to convert the measuring func-
tion to the moisture measurement. Each pressing of the button switches the measuring function
from wood moisture to material moisture and vice versa.
Hold down the "MODE" (5) button for approx. 2 seconds in the activated state to convert the
measuring function to the temperature measurement. Each time the button is pressed for
longer (approx. 2 seconds) the measuring function is switched from the ambient temperature
in °C to the ambient temperature in °F and vice versa.
Wood measurement
• Select the measurement function "wood measurement" and remove the protective cap from
the device.
• Stick the insertion sensor as far as possible into the material, at least 2 mm. Please ensure
that you measure diagonally to the wood grain in order not to falsify the measured value.
Repeat the measurement at different points, to receive an average area value.
• The display shows the measured value.
• Always replace the protective cap onto the device and switch it off at the end of the measure-
ment.
Tip: Firewood must show a residual moisture value of <20 Vol% before it can be used.
