Automatic Transmission Fluid
Level
At regular intervals, check the fluid
level of the autom atic transm ission
together with the engine oil level p rio r
to every long trip.
Check transm ission fluid level with the
engine idling, parking brake engaged
and selector lever in position " P". The
vehicle
m ust be parked
ground. P rior to the check, allow engi­
ne to idle fo r approx. 1 to 2 minutes.
Measure oil level with the dipstick
com pletely inserted and the locking
lever released ( 1).
Painstaking cleanliness m ust be o b ­
served!
T o w ip e th e d ip s tic k , u se a c lea n , lint-
free cloth (p referably leather).
C h eckin g Fuels
C oolants
T o fill the transm ission with fluid, only
p o ur it throug h a fine-m esh filte r into
the dip stick opening. Even the sligh t­
est im p u rity may cause operational
troubles.
The oil level in the transm ission is de­
pendent upon the oil tem perature.
The m axim um and m inim um oil level
m arks on the d ip stick are applicable
references only if the transm ission
fluid has reached its norm al operating
te m p era tu re of 80° C /1760 F. — If,
however, the transm ission fluid cools
down to 20— 30° C /68— 86° F, which

is the norm al shop tem p e ra ture range,
then the m axim um oil level will be
app roxim ate ly 30 m m /1.2 in below
on
level
the m inim um m ark on the dipstick.
We stress this point because an oil
change is norm ally perform ed when
the transm ission oil has cooled down
to shop tem perature.
The fluid level m ust not exceed the
dipstick m axim um mark with th e flu id
at operating tem perature. Drain or si­
phon o ff excess fluid, if required.
Then push d ipstick all the way in and
swing locking lever dow nw ards (2 ).
