Replenishing Coolant
To replenish coolant, the car m ust be
on level ground.
Do not rem ove pressure cap on co o l
ant reservoir if engine te m perature is
above 90° C /1 94° F. Allow engine to
cool down before rem oving cap. The
coolant reservoir contains hot water
and is under pressure.
First turn cap to firs t notch to relieve
excess pressure using a rag. If ope n
ed im m ediately, hot scalding fluid
and steam will be blown out under
pressure.
Add cold w ater only if engine is ru n
ning. Both hot and cold engines can
be readily filled up with hot water (see
also " fuels, coolants, lubricants, e tc.'',
page 80).
If a sm a ll am ount of coolant has to be
added (due to evaporation of water),
plain water can be added.
If a larger quantity of coolant has to be
added, a 50/50 m ixture of w ater and
antifreeze should be used.

280 SE
The coolant level m ust reach:
•
when the coolant is cold to the visi
ble m arking in the radiator fille r
neck,
•
when the coolant is hot to about
1 cm /0 .4 in above the m arking.
The drain plugs are situated on the
RFI engine side and on the ra dia to r
bottom .
450 SEL
The coolant reservoir with the filler
neck is separated from the radiator
and located in fron t of the battery.
The coolant level m ust reach:
•
to m arking (1) on the reservoir if
the coolant is cold,
•
about 2 c m /0.8 in higher if the
coolant is hot.
The drain plugs are on the right and
left side of the engine and on the ra
d ia to r bottom .
