Cleaning

For the frequency of this intervention
see chapter 13.
If the battery terminals are coated with oxide, they
should be cleaned.
Clean the battery terminals with a wire brush and
lubricate them with terminal grease.

9.11 AIR FILTER, ENGINE (27)

also the manual for the engine supplied
with the machine.
9.11.1

Cleaning / Replacement

For the frequency of this intervention
see chapter 13.
NOTE! The filters should be cleaned/re-
placed more often if the machine opera-
tes on very dusty ground.
Remove/install the air filters as follows:
[B&S Power Built] [B&S Intek]
1. Clean carefully around the air filter housing 
(27:A).
2. Remove the air filter cover by unscrewing the 
two screws.
3. Remove the paper filter (27:B). Make sure 
that no dirt gets into the carburettor. Clean
the air filter housing.
4. Clean the paper filter by tapping it gently 
against a flat surface. If the filter is very dirty, 
replace it.
5. Assemble the filter by performing the above 
instructions in reverse order.
Compressed air or petroleum-based solvents
such as kerosene must not be used for cleaning
the paper filter insert. This will damage the filter.
The paper filter insert must not be oiled.
[B&S Vanguard]
1. Clean carefully around the air filter cover.
2. Remove the air filter cover (27:A) by remov-
ing the two brackets.
3. Remove the filter unit (27:B). The prefilter 
can be found on top of the air filter. Make 
sure that no dirt gets into the carburettor.
Clean the air filter housing.
4. Clean the paper filter by tapping it gently

against a flat surface. If the filter is very dirty, 
replace it.
5. Clean the prefilter. If it is very dirty, replace it.
6. Assemble everything by performing the
above instructions in reverse order.

Remove/install the air filters as follows:
1. Clean the area around the filter cover (27:C).
2. Open the cover (27:C) by unscrewing the
opening k nob (27:D).
3. Remove the filter element (27:E, 27:F).
4. Remove the sponge pre-filter (27:F) from the 
cartridge (27:E).
5. Tap the cartridge (27:E) on a solid surface
and blow with compressed air from the inside
to remove dust and debris.
6. Wash the sponge pre-filter (27:F) with water 
and detergent and leave it to dry in the air.
7. Clean any dust and debris from the inside of
the filter housing (27:G) taking care to close 
the intake duct with a rag (27:H) to prevent
foreign bodies entering the engine.
8. Remove the rag (27:H), refit the filter element 
(27:F, 27:E) in its housing and refit the cover 
(27:C).

Replace the spark plug

Before removing the spark plug, clean around its
mounting.
For the type of spark plug and relative spark gap,
please refer to "0 TECHNICAL DATA TABLE".
9.11.3

Cleaning the air intake.

For the frequency of this intervention
see chapter 13.
See figure (21:C).
The engine is air-cooled.
A blocked cooling system can damage the engine.
More meticulous cleaning of the cooling system
should be carried out during each basic service.
