select NMEA as the output format on the D710. You will then forego the APRS icons,
and display the stationary blue circle and moving red triangle, as is displayed on the G4T,
or when using a D700 or D7.
On the G5, you can remove all APRS marks, by selecting Contacts > APRS folder you
will have the option then to delete the folder. Once the folder is deleted, all APRS marks
will be removed and the folder will be gone. When the first APRS mark is created, the
G5 will create a new folder. You must exit and return to Contacts to refresh the folder
display. You can use this method to assure that you are receiving fresh APRS data.
To have your G5 navigate to an APRS mark, select the desired APRS mark from the
APRS list and then press GO. Or, select the icon on the map, or from the map list, and
press GO. You will get new routing instructions to the selected APRS mark when a new
repositioned packet is received.
To have your G4T navigate to an APRS mark, select the APRS station in the
INCOMING folder. Press Menu and select SET AS DESTINATION AND
CALCULATE. You will get new routing instructions to the selected APRS mark when a
new reposition packet is received.
Once the system is properly operating, you should return to Menu 611 and make the
following settings:
BEACON TX ALGORITHM Menu 611
METHOD:
INITIAL INTERVAL:
DECAY ALGORITHM:
PROPORTIONAL PATHING:
Smart Beaconing will override the decay algorithm and proportional pathing. Menus 630
and 631 allow Smart Beaconing parameters to be modified. The defaults are
recommended for initial operation.
Now that you have a working system, read the Kenwood CD manual on APRS, and the
new TM-D710AE_IDM_R1.pdf manual downloadable from the Kenwood web site. The
former gives better step by step instructions, the latter is more up-to-date, and gives much
more background into APRS and other special operating modes.
Troubleshooting
If you do not see a flashing "GPS" signal on the upper right hand corner of the Kenwood,
or APRS stations are not appearing in the APRS Contacts list, then the APRS cable may
not be fully or correctly seated. Remove one plug and assure that it is the correct plug for
that unit, according to the description at the beginning of these instructions. Return the
plug to the proper port and firmly push it in. Check that the cord at the other end is
