YOUR ROBLAND X31 HAS ARRIVED Pictured below (fig. 1) is how your Robland X31 will arrive. The crate is made of heavy-duty particle board with four steel bands to ensure your machine arrives in perfect condition. Instructions: Remove the steel bands, and carefully remove the block-wood, starting with the top and then the sides.
  • Page 4 YOUR ROBLAND X31 Packaged to minimize shipping damage inside a plastic wrapping, the X31 will be secured to a well- supported pallet. All of the accessories and parts are packaged inside the box as shown in the fol- lowing figure: (In some cases accessories will be added inside the crate if you have ordered special items.)
  • Page 5: Moving With A Forklift

MOVING THE X31 WITH A FORKLIFT Slide the hoisting equipment under the table. You can also use 4 hoist hooks, as shown below. Then the machine can be lifted with a forklift truck, but severe shocks must be avoided. The machine must be placed on a concrete base and must be leveled perfectly horizontal in the two directions.

Connect the single phase (fig. 6) to the terminals marked L1, L2, and PE (Earth). All US machines are single-phase unless three-phase is special-ordered through Laguna Tools. Triple phase: Connect the 3 phase to the terminals marked (fig. 5) If there is a neutral conductor (blue), it is connected to the terminal N.

  • Page 15: Assembling Your X31

Assembling your X31 Step 1 The first step in the assembly of your machine is to install the mobility kit and clean off the preservative grease, which covers the unpainted surfaces. It will be necessary to move the machine to sit over the back edge of the skid until it over hangs the edge of the skid by about eight (8) inches.
  • Page 16 Assembling your X31 From the box of loose 'goodies', remove the saw tilt crank (ref. item 4, fig. 4) and engage it on the saw shaft at the upper front corner of the right side panel. Loosen the saw tilt-locking lever (ref. item 6, fig 4) and turn the saw tilt crank clockwise to tilt the saw to approximately 45 degrees.
  • Page 17 Step 2 The second step is removing the machine from the skid. Warning This machine is very heavy and must be handled with great care to avoid personal injury and/or damage to the machine. Get some help! It is very difficult to get the machine off the skid by yourself.
  • Page 18 Step 3 Installation of the sliding table - ref. fig 7 for this step *Loosen both rail-locking blocks (32) two or three turns. To loosen, turn plastic handle and, when it stops, pull down on it and start again as a ratchet would work. *Place the rail assembly (30) on the saw table near the left edge of the table with the smooth side up.
  • Page 19 Step 4 Checking the accuracy of the alignment of the sliding table and making adjustments. *From the 'goodie' box remove the clamp post (item 35, fig. 8). The style of clamp post will depend on whether you have the standard or the optional large sliding table. With the standard table, the post is a straight round bar.
  • Page 20 *Of greater importance is the necessity for the clearance to be uniform over the entire surface of the saw table . *Move the sliding table fore and aft, and observe the clearance at the extreme ends of the table at its left edge. Again, the variation should not exceed a few thousandths of an inch. Should the variation exceed your desired standard, proceed as follows: *Make sure both rail-locking levers (item 7, fig.
  • Page 21 If the variance is not to your satisfaction, it may be adjusted as follows: *In fig. 9 the standard sliding table is shown in the upside-down position. You will see at the center of the outer rail a bearing that carries the bulk of the weight of the sliding table. *In the case of the optional large table, there are two (2) of these bearings.
  • Page 22 *Remove the setscrew using the allen wrench provided. *Place your 6mm allen wrench in the screw at the jaw end of the chuck. Rotate it in the counter-clockwise direction to open the chuck. Place the short end of your 10mm allen wrench in the chuck, and tighten the chuck by rotating the 6mm wrench in the clockwise direction.
  • Page 23 Fig. 11 Note: The chuck has left-hand threads. *It will be necessary to loosen the jointer table-locking handle (fig. 4, item 12) and swing the table away at the rear of the machine only. Then wedge a block of wood between a cutter blade and the adjacent metal surface, to hold back-up on the shaft.

APPENDIX A 1) MAIN STOP SWITCH - red mushroom push-button switch located on the main electrical panel. Press to stop whichever motor is running. It is wise to be prepared to stop the machine when turn- ing it on, just in case any unknown problem arises. Stop switches are located conveniently near all operating locations.
  • Page 27 7) COMBINATION SAW DEPTH ADJUSTMENT & LOCK - Depth adjustment is made by releasing the lock mechanism (rotate the handle counter-clockwise); then push the handle down to increase the saw exposure above the table or pull the handle up to decrease the saw exposure. The lock must be securely set (rotate the handle clockwise) prior to the saw operation.
  • Page 28 replaced on the table without altering any setup in the saw table area (e.g. a saw blade depth set- ting that you wish to retain). 14) RIP FENCE SLIDE-LOCKING LEVER* - The slide-locking lever is used to lock the rip fence in the selected position.
  • Page 29 For that reason, it is possible to use more than one swivel-length stop on the same setup, making it possible to cut at several lengths without making a setup for each cut. Additional stops can be obtained from Laguna Tools.
  • Page 30 It makes possible the ability to make precise angular and length cuts repetitively. Two fences are available through Laguna Tools: 48" and 24". See accessories. 26) SLIDING TABLE - The sliding table is roller-bearing mounted on a set of rails which run parallel to the saw blade.
  • Page 31 39) BALL BEARING - Is centrally located on the under-side of the sliding table and bears the load of the table on the outer rail of the rail assembly. This bearing is eccentrically mounted to allow for ver- tical adjustment of the sliding table. 40) MORTISER MOUNTING BOLTS - The two (2) allen head cap screws are provided to fasten the mortiser to the side panel of the jointer/planer.
  • Page 32: How To Get Your X31 Through A Narrow Door

X31 THROUGH A NARROW DOOR As you will have observed, the Robland X31 Combination Machine is a large machine. It is entirely possible that it may be larger than the door you want to take it through This presents only a slight problem. The machine can be partially disassembled, moved through the door and reassembled on the other side.
  • Page 33 *The switch box can then be moved in and to the right to remove it from the left side panel. *Remove bolts (fig. C2, items C3 & C4) and the corresponding bolts at the rear of the machine. The left side panel of the machine will come away from the machine. *Replace the switch panel on the box so that you do not damage any of the equipment in the main switch box.
  • Page 34 Fig. Fig. C4 Having accomplished these tasks, the X31 machine should measure approximately 31 ½ inches in width. The infeed and outfeed tables can be reinstalled as follows: First, install the outfeed table, and using a straight edge, align the table to the cutter head. If the machine is still too large to fit through the door, it will be necessary to remove the saw/shaper table from the machine.
