Obtaining best measuring results
Electrostatic charging in general strongly depends on climatic influences.
Therefore measuring of charge transfer should not be carried out at air
humidity > 50 % r.h. As measuring values may also be influenced by absolute
air humidity - but in a lower extent - a higher rel. air humidity may be tolerated
at, e.g. 10 °C than at about 30 °C.
Approaching the sphere electrode to the object under test should be carried
out at a speed of about 1 m/s. In case no brush discharge occurs up to a
surface of the object under test. Grazing approach could bring up several
brush discharges following quickly one another. Those single impulses will be
summed up if their time distance is less than 10 s. This would result in a too
high measuring.
Care has to be taken to keep the sphere electrode free of scratches and
settled dust particles. In both cases corona discharges may occur distorting
the measuring result.
When the device is taken from a cold store room into a warmer area
condensation of air humidity may occur resulting in a deterioration of electrical
isolation causing incorrect measuring. Therefore, after abrupt change in
temperature sufficient time for adaptation should be made possible.
As electrostatic charging often is subject to fluctuations, in order to evaluate a
situation of danger a higher amount of measuring should be carried out. All
relevant influences in generating electrostatic charging have to be taken into
considerarion (e.g. climate, separating speed, contact pressure).
