Chapter 5. Solving problems

This chapter provides basic troubleshooting information to help you solve some
common problems that might occur while you are setting up your server.
If you cannot locate and correct the problem using the information in this chapter,
see Chapter 6, "Getting help and technical assistance", on page 61, the Hardware
Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM xSeries Documentation
CD, and the "Server Support" flowchart in the front of this book.

Diagnostic tools overview

The following tools are available to help you diagnose and solve hardware-related
problems:
v POST error codes
v Light path diagnostics
v Troubleshooting charts
v Diagnostic programs and error messages

POST error codes

The following table provides an abbreviated list of the error codes that might appear
in the System Error Log during POST. See the Hardware Maintenance Manual and
Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM xSeries Documentation CD for more information
about the POST error codes.

The power-on self-test error codes indicate the status of POST. See "POST error
codes" and the Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on
the IBM xSeries Documentation CD for more information.
Use light path diagnostics to diagnose system errors quickly. See "Light path
diagnostics" on page 56 for more information.
These charts list problem symptoms and steps to correct the problems. See the
"Troubleshooting charts" on page 52 for more information.
The system diagnostic programs are provided in ROM. These programs test the
major components of your server. See the Hardware Maintenance Manual and
Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM xSeries Documentation CD for more
information.
Suggested action
Have the system serviced.
Check that the processor board is properly seated. If it
is, call for service.
Check that the memory board is properly seated. If it is,
call for service.
Check that the I/O board is properly seated. If it is, call
for service.
Update the system SAL/EFI code.
Call for service.
