HOUR METER

Displays the amount of time spent on
individual jobs, service alerts, and
recommended service intervals.

STEERING-LOCK LEVER

Locks the steering feature for continual
straight-line operation.

TRANSAXLE BYPASS LEVERS

Engage and disengage transaxles so unit can
be moved with the engine off.

ANTI-SCALP WHEELS

Models 988172, 988173, 988174
Help prevent the deck from contacting the
ground and scalping the lawn when mowing
over high spots.

SAFETY INTERLOCK SYSTEM

Monitors the interaction of various unit
features for operator safety. See Test Safety
Interlock System on page 15.

STARTING INDICATOR LIGHTS

Illuminate separately when the drive control
grip is in neutral, parking brake is engaged
and the PTO switch is in the off position.
Ignition key will not start engine unless all
three lights are illuminated.

BEFORE OPERATION

WARNING: AVOID INJURY.
Read and understand the Safety
section before proceeding.
1. Know how to stop in an emergency. See
Emergency Stopping on page 16.
2. Check fuel level and add fuel if needed.
IMPORTANT: Use fresh unleaded fuel with
an octane rating of at least 87. DO NOT use
E85 blended fuels; the engine is not E20 /
E30 / E85 compatible. The maximum
recommended ethanol content is E10.
Gravely recommends using a quality fuel
stabilizer in all fuel. See Short-Term Storage
on page 38.
3. Check engine oil level and add oil if
needed. Refer to engine manual.
4. Check hydraulic oil level. See Check
Hydraulic System on page 20.
5. Check air filter. Refer to engine manual.
6. Check function of all controls.
7. Adjust handlebar height. See Adjust
Handlebar Height on page 27.
8. Check function of the Safety Interlock
System by performing the tests below.
Contact your Gravely dealer for repair if
any of the tests fail.
TEST SAFETY INTERLOCK
SYSTEM
WARNING: AVOID INJURY.
Failure of Safety Interlock
System together with improper
operation can result in severe
personal injury.
Starting
See Start The Engine on page 16.
• Engine will not start with parking brake
released.
• Engine will not start with PTO on.
• Engine will not start with drive control grip
out of the neutral position.
• Engine will only start when all three starting
indicator lights are illuminated.
Operation
See Operate Unit on page 16.
• Engine will stop if PTO is engaged while
operator presence lever is disengaged.
• Engine will stop if dive control grip is
rotated while operator presence lever is
disengaged.
• Engine will stop if parking brake is released
while operator presence lever is
disengaged.

SET CUTTING HEIGHT

See Figure 15.
WARNING: AVOID INJURY.
Stop the engine, engage parking
brake, and remove key before
changing height-of-cut. Unit
MUST be parked on a flat, level
surface.
1. Pull deck lift lever completely backward.
2. Remove adjustment pin from height-of-
cut adjustment bracket.
3. Insert adjustment pin through desired
setting in height-of-cut bracket.
4. Slowly release deck lift lever until lever
contacts adjustment pin.
