MECHANICAL STEERING GEAR REPLACEMENT

NOTE: A ll steerin g gear, and pitman arm attaching bolts and nuts a re im port­
ant attaching parts in that they could affect the perform ance of vital com ponents
and sy ste m s, and/or could resu lt in major repair expense. They m ust be replaced
with parts of the sam e part numbers or with equivalent p arts if replacem ent b e­
com es n e c e ssa r y . Do not u se replacem ent p arts of le s s e r quality or substitute
design . Torque values m ust be used a s sp ecified during rea ssem b ly to a ssu r e
proper retention of these p a rts.
If the steerin g gear cannot be properly adjust­
ed, or if during adjustm ent procedures "lumpy" or
"rough" action is noticed, the steerin g gear m ust
be rem oved from the veh icle and overhauled. The
steerin g gear m ust be rem oved from the veh icle
for a ll overhaul procedu res.
STEERING GEAR REM OVAL
1. D isconnect steerin g linkage from Pitman
arm .
2. Scribe an alignm ent mark on steerin g gear
w orm shaft and clam p yoke or coupling on steerin g
gear low er or interm ediate shaft.
3. R em ove bolt attaching low er or interm ed­
iate shaft clamp yoke or coupling to steerin g gear
worm shaft.
4. On conventional cab m odels which have P it­
man arm retained with a clamp bolt, nut, and
sp e cia l hardened w asher, scr ib e an alignm ent
m ark a c r o ss Pitm an arm and shaft (fig. 26). R e­
m ove Pitm an arm .
On a ll other v e h ic le s, rem ove Pitm an arm nut
and lock washer; then using p uller (J-3186), r e ­
m ove Pitm an arm .
5. Rem ove bolts,
nuts,
which attach steerin g gear to fram e and rem ove
steerin g gear.
STEERING GEAR INSTALLATION
1. P o sitio n steerin g w heel in straight-ahead
position and steerin g gear in cen ter position. Mark
on worm shaft should be in
2. P osition steerin g gear on fram e sid e m em ­
b er, and at the sam e tim e slid e the worm shaft
into the clamp yoke or cospling on steerin g low er
or interm ediate shaft.
IMPORTANT:
Check to make su re match
m arks on low er or interm ediate shaft clamp yoke
or coupling and steerin g gear worm shaft are
aligned.
3. In stall b olts, nuts, and w ashers which at­
tach steerin g gear to fram e. Tighten bolts to torque
liste d in "Specifications" at end of th is section .

tighten to torque sp ecified in "Specifications" at
